My 2010 Cow Elk - Pic Warning

Sweet! Nice hunting, heaps better than the skunking we took up at the Peace River last week.....I have a synthetic stock on order for my M305 and a good Rock Steady mount for her as well. Looking forward to going after Mulies in Cache Creek next year!
Thanks for the pics of your trip, Bro!

Just on another note though you mentioned 3 cows and a calf ? this may seem like a stupid comment but tell me the calf wasnt near newborn or shortly after .. that doesnt seem ethical to me is all , which is why i ask .

The calf was big enough that it should survive the winter. It ran off with the 3rd cow so will be able to hook up with the herd.

I don't know about anyone else but I was taught in hunter safety that if a calf/fawn is still small/young around hunting season there is a slim chance that it will survive the winter.

Yep, I don't know if the percentage has changed but we were taught that the calf has about 50% chance of making it through winter. Most Adults will survive and breed once again.

I was using my Norinco M305 with 150 gr. Winchester Power Max in .308. I was hoping to use my dad's S&W .30-06 but we were having trouble sighting it in. Plus using a semi auto helped.
I fried up some tenderloin last night and it was perfect. Too bad my wife doesn't eat wild meat, I guess that means there's more for me.

I was hunting in zone 42 for you Sask boys. Land was posted but we got permission from the owner. I don't think steaks would last in the mail. Might just have to stop by for a visit.

Hey Jay, Still training. Looking forward to meeting up again.

- Next we're planning some wild boar hunting in the area. Pictures of the hog hunt will be added.

Cheers,

Congratulations. I live in zone 42 but have never hunted this area for Elk.

Nice , that thing is huge , way to go .

Calf survival does not depend on it being with its mother at that point, as long as the calf has a cow (any cow) to stick with it will be as safe as if its with its mom. When we relocated elk we never worried about keeping cow/calf pairs together.
