He and his like sized partner, were having lunch on the treeline of a road cut yesterday, when I happened along.

Was able to get up to 150 yards and set myself up on a rise in the ground, for a prone shot. One shot, no tracking. No bleeding at all out of his throat, when I cut it. Totalled the liver, back end of the lungs were a mess, and missed the ribs in and out. Real happy! Figure I probably lost less than a hamburger worth of eats. Another great result from cheap Winchester bulk bullets in my .308 ! :)

Great eating buck! More fat on his ass than the entire PTA! He's in really great shape to go into winter (Was, anyways) and if he's typical for condition in his area, they should winter well. Not much for horn on him, but a big body, and he was the better shot of the two. Now to cut and wrap, then maybe one more this year...

Yummy!

Cutting the throat is unnecessary. These aren't pics in an abbatoir. When you chop a hole in their plumbing the blood runs out of them plenty fast enough.

Yeah. I know.

But I cut it anyway. If there is any amount of heartbeat left, it helps drain out. And a cold-cocked deer will never get up and run very far without it's carotid (is it still a carotid, on a deer?) intact. I've heard a few stories of that happening, and knew a fella that took a real kicking from a doe that he shot with his BP rifle, that he thought was dead.

Further to that, it was not gonna be a wall mount, by any means, so having it cut did not cause any further hardship. For myself, or for the buck. Pretty much redundant. Makes a good starting point for the chin to tail split line. too.

Thanks for the congrats! Groceries is pretty much what I was looking for, and found. Still got a couple tags left, too, so I have a real good reason to get my arse away from the computer a few more times! :D

To top that all off, I got the first Ruffie of the season while I was out yesterday! A Hammond Game Getter does it again! They've been pretty scarce around here. Saw three more, too. Good to know some made it through the long wet spring and summer.

This deer felt really good! Best kind. Head down, fully relaxed. No tracking, no fuss.

It was a really great day out, too. Fog didn't burn off 'till mid afternoon, so the roads and trails stayed pretty solid. Found some new places, checked in on some old ones, and had a great day out!
