The rut is in Full swing. heres a bit of a yarn of how it went down Friday morning.
This hunt Felt like I was playing a Ps3 Game and went something like this.
Up early after a pretty decent night on the Scotch, around the fire with good company, The bucks were vocal for most of the night in the distant valley although one in particular over on a grassy face made the most noise.
I boiled up a Milo pretty quickly and went up to a scout post to glass the area ahead, in hopes of getting a look at the Racket making Buck upon the first light, as it cracked over the horizon a few colours stood out and within a few moment I had picked up the big Frog , some 500m away.
I tried to assess the Rack in which he Carried but due to the low light it was impossible in the 10x binos, a Fellow hunter was itching to get out and I could hear a buck croaking down the Valley in the tussock gulley area and that he should investigate, so I pointed out that I was going to put in a Hunt on the buck, as I could now make out enough of a Palm to invite me over..
From here I pressed the Start button. the chase was on.
I had to make a pretty swift route to the creek, down thru and back up the other side, quite a steep climb which had the heart rate up and sucking in the big ones, as I closed to within 200ms or so I thought a opportunity could arise at any minute and I didn't need to be huffing an puffing trying to off hand etc.
I gathered an began making my way up to my right, still going rather swift I thought it was all over when on the horizon a set of ears an eye balls, starring at me, so I backed a little an went a bit further before I came in, and by came in I mean I came in!!
I marched rather proudly, forward with the rifle in both hands out in front incase the Buck was around,
Doe would run off to my Left, another few would run directly away and some more take off to the left, now about 7 deer have taken off and I'm still marching, thinking ive blown it or its about to blow..
as I near two tress for some cover the buck spots me an Dances off a bit, chasing his does but a bit unsure about me that's for sure.... as he took flight The Race was on, For he had 50m to make and I had 15 to the tree!!! who would make it first.
I reached the tree and flicked the safety off, followed him in the 2-7 and when all felt sweet I sent , soundo f a hit and a shuttered deer, but continued on and I reloaded, got the gun back up and picked him up again just making the tree line, Texas, You beauty , I sent another and watched the Buck fall down with a rear end Spine shot... it was a sight and I felt sorry for the Does and now past King.
He was old, in every way.. I'm pleased to have been able to Glass, TC and sniff out Two great Bucks off this block, and hope that the 3rd King can return next year, a Whopper.
