I finally done it! After over 20 years of raising my 2 boys and not having my McMillan M1A Phat Bastard stock (needed the money in 1990 and had to sell that M1A), I finally own a McMillan HTG stock on my M700 .22-250 build.
The build started out with 2 Remington SPS rifles from www.ellwoodepps.com, their gun room staff was uber patient with me while I dilly-dally'ed what to buy so that my #### would not fall off.
In the end I bought TWO (can you say, "don't buy ONE, but buy TWO of them?)
of the Rem M700 SPS rifles.
I bought an SPS Tactical .223 1 in 9" twist and had Doug at Epps pull the barrel off and install a .223 SPS barrel that Rockchucker in the Yukon sold me. Super nice guy he is... That was my earth pig gitter..
Have a look at this picture. Nice short 18.0" barrel sitting in a McMillan hunting stock bought off the EE Forum here.
Then with the other M700 SPS in .308, I had Doug pull off that barrel and install the .223 SPS Tactical 20" 1 in 9" twist barrel and rechamber it for my favorite varmint caliber, .22-250. Now I have a tight twist .22-250 capable of shooting the 75 gr Hornady Amax bullet up to 800 meters at Connaught should my schedule this summer allow me.
On my rifles, I've bought Falcon Menace scopes for Allen Gun Works (a board sponsor) since their quality is great for the money. Life being perfect, I would dearly love Mark4 glass, but since I'm too fugly to deploy overseas, the Falcon Menace line will do the job for my gopher sniper rigs.
On my M700 short actions, I ordered Arms Tech Mag Extenders from the USA, and the install job went without a hitch. These resin mag extenders allow great capacity for your bolt guns, but I really like how the magazine extender allows a nicer balance point carry, just like my No4 Mk1 Jungle Carbine cut down wannabee Mk5.
And as you can see, I'm all about the Eagle Stock pack / cheekpiece. You can order them from Seals Action Gear in Calgary.
The bolt handles were sold and installed by Mike over at Allen Gun Works and the quality is fantastic. Fast turnaround I must say. Glad that he's back from the hot and sandy Aghanistan!
The McM HTG stock in OD Green 75% and black 25% was bought at JWPrecision one of our board dealers here in Bantario. Go over there and drool: http://jwprecision.ca/products.html
He stocks them in his inventory (lays out the $$) so that you can for the most part (Rem M700 SA and LA, right hand BDL format) avoid the 4 to 5 month wait if you order from McMillan's website or factory.
The only downside is you gotta ensure that the pictures of the stocks that he updates on his site regularly are the cammo pattern/features you want in your (once in a lifetime for me) McMillan dream rifle/stock/rig/build. I was after a SA RH BDL HTG stock in some desert cammo, but when I discovered
that he had an OD 75% Black 25% marble swirl, I thought that maybe I should get off my butt and buy a lottery ticket; I was in luck!
I PM'ed John Wall and lo and behold, that HTG was in Bantario and ready for shipping. 3 days after payment (VISA is great over the phone...) , I picked up the stock at the post office and was home smelling the Decelerator pad matched up to the 13.5" LOPull.
The install was phenomenally simple. McMillan's CNC inletting is amazing because the stock and barreled action just seamlessly dropped in. I could not get over the fact that my 'rasps on standby' were not needed for any fine tuning of the inlet area. McMillan says that bedding is not required, but since I am a competitor, I need the confidence (real or perceived) that comes with bedding this barreled action with a layer of Devcon or MarineTex to the HTG stock.
The fit is almost a custom skin tight fit. I found the mating surfaces were almost made perfectly for each other. The barrel free floated all the way to the recoil lug. I function / safety tested the trigger and safety to ensure that there were no contact points anywhere near the critical trigger areas. Life is good. Lots and lots of room around that region.
Sometime this spring, I will group the rifle/ammo/stock combination. Then I will skim bed and then retest with the same ammo. But since I am a wuss by reputation, I'll wait for the good weather to arrive. My range is not plowed and we live on top of the Niagara Escrapement (it's a snow belt) and I'm not ready to snowshoe inside to do any amount of serious testing.
Now if only I could figure out which hardware the 2 flush cups on the portside of the stock will need I'll be away to the races. Actually I hardly ever sling this boomstick, so I'll just forget those flush cups for the time being.
Okay, that's it for now. Next report we'll yak about groups. In the fall when I had a different stock, the groups hovered around 0.75" but I was hurrying and goofing off. This spring I will get more serious.
It's been a super smooth and fun build using sponsors / dealers from this board!
