My 22 shoots 1/2" groups at 50 yards/meters all day! Really? Prove it!

Thank you Rod. Yes it is quite pleasing to get performance without any fuss! I'm still only at a round count of 300 with it and have many ammo types to test out yet as I've just been shooting the Lapua so far. I know this rifle will come to life and really hammer out a great target in the near future when I find the ammo and do a little tuning. When it is Silhouette shooting season again in the spring, I'll know any misses were certainly me ;)

Good job rabid nice to see you get out and get a decent result from all the hard work and $$$ spent. -2 down right balmy it's finally supposed to warm up here next week as it got up to -6 here today.

Alrighty, time to get this thread back on the rails! It was a crisp -2C with calm, 3-5 mph winds today. I was heating up a gel pack in the microwave to put in the cooler and keep my ammo warm, pouring my coffee and I hear this *POP* Oh crap! It exploded in the microwave after only 30 seconds! ARRRGHHHH luckily I read about Chilly using hot water bottles so I filled one up and used it instead (great idea). I recently re-barreled my Weatherby XXII with an Anschütz 1416 D HB barrel since I had determined after much testing the original barrel was just never going to beat this challenge. This target is a bit of a squeaker, but I am posting it anyway since I'm happy to finally get this rifle shooting proper. I haven't done any ammo testing or tuning yet so there's definitely room for improvement and hey, this was literally my first attempt at the challenge with the new barrel and I already nailed it :)

Weatherby XXII
Lapua Midas +
Vortex Crossfire II 6-18x
Caldwell Rock font rest with Narrow Sporter bag, Caldwell rear bag
Groups: 0.494", 0.457", 0.405", 0.306", 0.171"
Average = 0.366"

Good shooting Rabid. I added you to the successful list again.

I can't complete this challenge when its below 0. Its kind of frustrating.

Keep yer ammo warm in a cooler, load one clip at a time! If ya still can't do it with quality ammo, time for a new barrel ;)

I'm with you, it's too f--king cold for true precision, still fun to plink though.;)

Cold does not benefit rimfire accuracy, that's for sure. It is not impossible though ;)

Made about 10 or 12 attempts the other day and end up pulling 1 shot every time. Every group 4 shots under the 1/2" and 1 of them makes it 3/4" to 1" group. Got to frustrated and gave up.

Well I sure jumped the gun (Haha :d) on posting an official result, my Weatherby XXII is one sweet shooter now! Feed it the preferred Lapua Midas + and she now gave me the challenge result of all 0.2's and 0.3's that I had been seeking, but unable to obtain with my MSR. Average for 40 five-shot groups with 8 different ammo types was 0.455", it don't get much more 1/2" all day than that!

Every group? You sure you're "pulling" a shot, it felt "bad" and went flying? I have a hard time believing with that volume of shooting no groups were flier free and it's all your fault. If you can get 4 shots under 1/2" on the regular, at least a few times all 5 would have come together for you. Time to start looking at your ammo (tested all the brands yet?) and maybe, just maybe, the rifle ain't up to snuff for the challenge.

Only tried a couple different kinds of ammo I had kicking around. Cheap federal champions and federal auto match. Marlin 60 I'm trying it with and she hates winchester and the most Remington ammo.I knew I pulled a few of them but thought some of them felt good too. Not sure what to think. Never have been great at punching paper. That's some nice shooting Rabid.Nice groups.

That explains it. This challenge demands a serious rifle with serious ammo. I just don't see a Marlin being capable of it, certainly not with the ammo you've been using either. My XXII wouldn't do it with that ammo either. This Rimfire precision game can drive ya nuts, gotta know when to hold 'em, and when to fold 'em.

Thanks Rod! Also quite pleased that it was my hand doing all the gunsmithing work to get it to this point :) as long as it doesn't require machining work, chances are I can do it myself.

congratulations, very tight groups. rifle and shooter working together for maximum performance.

That is great shooting no doubt......but per the rules:

There cannot be any other groups on your "official" target""

Can't tell if there are or aren't any other groups.

It's on a page with 40 groups. I already posted an official target for that rifle as I said "jumped the gun" on it, so I'm not concerned about that new one being "official" it just happened while I was ammo testing and I wanted to share that the rifle could do better than what I posted before.
