It's finally complete! I wanted to build something for NSCC and Precision Rifle matches but in a more wind efficient platform / bullet combination. I'm a short action kinda guy because for inside 1000 yard shooting, I don't need to burn up too much powder. Hey, I'm only putting holes in paper! :D

Juanvaldez, a dealer here on CGNutz provided me with (hey, he has them in stock and ready to ship to you  ) a 6.5 mm Shilen Match 8" twist barrel in a Hvy Varmint contour. He did the installation and the headspace is exactly 1.630" according to my RCBS Precision Mic (0.308 Win parent case, too). Nice tight match chamber!

Juanvaldez cut down (to finish) the barrel at 24" because I do have to run with my rifle at NSCC Precision Rifle events this coming August 2011 in Connaught Ranges. He did a fantastic job installing the barrel on the Rem M700 SPS Varmint receiver. He does great work!

About the Precision Rifle matches, wanna learn more ? www.dcra.ca and follow the links to National Service Conditions Championships on the left margin, I believe.

Here it is at Blue Ridge SC, my home club.

I have not glass bedded the action in the the stock YET, that will come after I do some load workups and testing (all before I head off to NSCC in Ottawa, end August).

Mounted on top of the rifle is a Leupold Mark4 LR/T 6.5 x 20 x 50mm TMR reticle. And yes, that is correct... you saw it right; I am using Millett Angle-Loc 30mm rings because they work for me. I'm too gimpy to deploy and NO mil force wants an old fart like me, so the Millett rings hafta work for my needs. I bought them at Ellwood Epps, a board sponsor (banner above). I even bought the base at Ellwood Epps. Believe it or not, they are the $ 20 1 piece base made by Weaver, inexpensive aluminum. So far it's working for me. Yes, I would dearly love steel and all that tactical stuff, but I need to sell off all kinds of other parts in my basement. I'll work on that for September.

The tactical bolt knob was sold and installed for me by Mike at Allen Gun Works, another board sponsor. Great work done by Mike!

I bought the stock from CGNutter 556NATO, a great guy to buy stuff from! The trigger is tuned down to 3 pounds since the DCRA's NSCC rulebook requires a trigger pull of 1 kilogram for the National level matches.

How does she shoot? A fzck of a lot better than I can hold it. Poor Juanvaldez... all this spring, I was grouping from the bench where of course, my benchrest technique always SUCKED. I could get the bullets JUST into an inch. Sean at NorthShoreBarrels (Juanvaldez) assured me that this barrel can shoot into half an inch (assuming I can do my part, he just did not realize that I suck AT the BENCH).

In reality once I got the gun and load to settle on the 108 gr Lapua Scenar bullet (6.5 mm) with 39.0 gr WC735 Surplus powder from Higginson's Powders in the Hawkesbury, ON area; this rifle began printing well under an inch.

It's about time I finally smartened up and began shooting from the prone position on my Kommunixt Zhinese knockoff Stalker drag matt, yup , on the ground. Now the groups got promising, UNTIL my lousy technique screwed up some nice groups that began developing.

DSCN3490.jpg

Have a look at the picture of the 3 groups, notice any patterns? f:P: Newbies to the PR game will be able to see what a screwup I can be while behind this finely built rifle.

I wish I was not so hyperactive and I just could not settle down because I had to head home quickly, so as usual, I shot in a hurry before I had to rush outta there. Now, if one could just overlook that single & consistent flyer from each of the 3 groups, I would be mighty proud of things. Unfortunately, it's the loose nut behind the trigger that is at fault with this entire combination! Just lots of practice for the next couple of weeks, I guess! f:P:

I'm quite proud of this build and I'm looking forward to shooting this rig at NSCC matches in a couple of weeks. Time to get reloading! :D Any of you interested in a build down the road, give Sean (juanvaldez) a shout at www.northshorebarrels.ca/ (sponsoring dealer on this board). He'll be happy to discuss your needs with you!

Cheers,
Barney

I bought one of the same barrels from him, but had Bill Leeper turn it down to a lightweight, .540 at 21" muzzle. Still shoots as tight...:D

Thats bizarre that 48 grains of h4350 cloverleafs with 100 BTs in your 260 as well as mine.....must be the magic powder and charge

Nice build Barney.

Just curious why you're working on the light end of the bullet spectrum for the 260 if you plan on long range with it ? I'm running a Savage action with the same Shilen barrel, but chambered in .260AI. Loves the 139g Scenars pushed by 4831SC.

He has built or provided parts to build two guns for me. A 6.5x55 that groups about 1 inch at 200 yards. We still need to complete the 338 Edge. Waiting on parts.

He does excellent work.

I bought a bunch of them (300 count) from Ellwood Epps when the project started and right now they seem to be working, I would like to wring 'em out to 800m at Connaught. I'll use them up and switch to the 139 gr Scenar bullets once Epps gets them in stock. I've bought directly from Peter Dobson at Hirsch Precision in the past, but I do want to keep things local (Epps is only an hour from my house).

In the past, I've had decent success (read: when I do my part) with a .22-250 9" twist barreled rifle shooting the Hornady 75 gr .224 diam Amax bullets coming out around 3050 fps from a 20" barreled M700. So I figured my 108 gr 6.5 mm diam Scenar bullet will do just fine; I'll let you know after I shoot these in Connaught at the end of August during NSCC hosted by the DCRA.ca folks. :D

Cheers,
Barney

Very Nice Rifle, Even the Cheek piece.

Sean built a 6mmBR for me (Shilen barrel, Savage Target Action, HS Precison stock).

I'm very happy with the results. Excellent service, gun shoots very well.

Best 5 shot group so far is .2" @100yrds

Now I need to get out past 100 yards with it, and see what it can REALLY do!

Mine is being put together right now by Juanvaldez as well. Built On a Savage action, .260 Remington, Shilen Select Match Barrel! Already got my bullets, powder and primers, dies are on the way. Can't wait for the finished product to be shipped home. Yee.
Haw.

Nice Build Hungry, have fun shooting at Connaught.!

Okay, it's mid-Sep and I can finally clean things up and put other things away after returning from the DCRA NSCC matches. I placed something like 15th or 16th (I'm trying to decipher the 'pairs' result from www.dcra.ca pages). :D

The local joke is that we built this rifle sometime in June or May and I have not had the ammo, dies, brass, bullets to develop a load until about mid-August. The DCRA NSCC matches for me began on the 28th Aug 'walkback' and until then, I had not shot this rifle and it's ammo load past 100m.

I showed up at the Nationals with an untested rifle platform, untested, and un (long distance) proven ammo load/bullet combination; and still placed in the top 20. My sniper partner (Quiet; I owe him a pile of thanks) and I placed 6th pair overall. I'm super pleased in the context of things.

I have many people to thank along the journey:

* juanvaldez for the barrel and the build
* TerryP (Canada's best, repeatedly) for inspiring me to size used .308 brass 'experiment'
* Peter Dobson of Hirsch Precision - Importer of fine Lapua Boolits
* quiet; my sniper partner who guided me through the 'Connaught fishtailing' winds and advised me when to 'loose' the boolit
* my guardian angel gunsmith who inspired me to keep building and experimenting with Rem M700 platforms (you know who you are.... )
* and finally the LFWA sniper/shooters who put up with my stale jokes in the butts!

All of you helped me get my MOJO back! :dancingbanana:

So in conclusion, the groups may be goofy at 100m as you can see by my pics in the previous posts, but the proof is in the DCRA NSCC Precision Rifle pages. I shot a personal best EVER and the stars (literally and metaphorically) lined up for me and my supporters. Warmest Thanks!

Now to begin experimenting with the Lapua Scenar 139 gr boolits sold to me by Peter Dobson of Hirsch Precision! :D Time to leave the 108 gr Scenars for the short/medium range distances!

Cheers all,

Barney

So it's now Feb and I installed my bbl'ed action into an AICS2.0 stock. And I got out to my snowy club for some action, but it was after work and things were getting dark.

I also installed the SKT Industries cheekpiece for the AICS. Chris at SKT Industries (you can google them) is the sole person there. He makes different models for the different versions (left and right handed, too) of AICS like the 1.5, 2.0 etc. I bought mine in FDE or Coyote or something like that.

IMG_0241.jpg

I finally got around to mounting this rifle into the AICS2.0 stock and then installed a Warne Tactical 0MOA base and also some TPS Steel rings (Low). As you can see, the light was falling and I had to shoot while I could. Have a look at 3 shots into my black patch at 100m.

IMG_0248.jpg

It's not benchrest quality by any means, but it's more accurate than I can hold it. :D Now to start work on the 139 Lapua Scenar boolits for the spring! Better get case prepping and reloading!

Cheers,
Barney
