Hey guys
well finally got to go to back of property and spend just over an hour with my ruger 10/22 testing out two things.
1st - Butler Creek Magazine Steel Lips ---
well not too happy cause upon picking them up found that I had to grind down the lips alittle to allow the action to slide back and forth as it was catching
2nd --Winchester® 525 Value Pack vs Federal Champion 525 Value Pack
well I found more hang ups and stovepipes and even miss loads with the winchester ammo...
100 rounds of the federal only maybe 20 or less messed up but the winchester rounds kept giving me trouble..
anyone else have done comparison?
I'm looking for a possible replacement for my Pursuit X1 Red Dot Scope as I can't seem to get the dot to get any brighter...at range it's not bad but in back outside of house I find difficult to see red dot. Any thoughts?

I prefer trays... the 100 packs like these:

CCI has them too. I inspect the bullets before I pick them, look for waxy buildups / beads / deformations etc.. In general the winchesters look pretty solid, and the CCI is hit or miss in the "finish" department. The last pack of standard velocity from CCI had some waxy drops on them, but the velocitors were nice and clear. The winchesters look "prettier". The threads on the rings are fantastic vs the CCI smooth finished rings.

Target shooting will tell me which one my 10/22 prefers.
 
Not a direct comparison as you've done in this particular gun, but Winchester have performed terrible in both my Mossberg 715 and my GSG 1911.
As well in my Savage .22WMR I was getting 2 or 3 out of 10 FTF. Of all the ammo I tried in this gun there were the usual accuracy variances, but Winchester was the only round that actually failed to fire on a consistent basis.
Wouldn't shoot this stuff if it was given to me.
 
I shot 200 or more rounds out of a 555round box of Winchester 36grain hollowpoint copper jacketed 1280fps last sunday and it was just fine. Not one problem. I thought I had a dud once, and it did sound different but upon closer inspection the bore was clear and the case ejected correctly.

This was out of my Norinco JW25a mauser copy.

I also shot 10 rounds of CCI stingers out of the same rifle, and of course they were just as good, and you could hear the extra oomph of the 1640fps chunk of lead when it hit the target or wet ground.

I will not hesitate to try those Federals you speak of and I will also look for those 40gr Winchester ones too, those look nice. Little bit more energy in a 40gr that goes as fast as a 36gr.
 
I don't buy winchester ammo at all unless it's in the 100 pack because its just crap ammo doesn't even like to work in a bolt action figure that one out its just very thin brass thats the problem ie they cheaped out allot and made crap cammo. When you can use a pinky to bend a .22 lr round in half there is something wrong with it. (can't do that with other brands nice and stiff) Thats why it has bad feeding.

I threw half a box of ammo away because it was so bad. Other brands no problem that ammo is just junk run far away. The Federal 525 isn't the most accuracte ammo but its not bad at least it goes bang.

Ruger 10/22
Dlask Arms 10/22
Sears Bolt action .22lr (Like a Stevens 300)
Stevens 300 13 inch barrel
GSG 1911
Erma 22 LR (small pistol)
Henry Us Survival rifle
Henry H001 (lever action)
Norinco JW 22 (browning copy It would eject ammo only likes CCI ammo)

I've found it liked none of the firearms at all. Not 1 they all jammed and had problems with feeding accuracy I had no idea because it was to busy clearing a jam after a jam it was every second round if I was lucky if not every round. The only thing it worked in was my friends single action pistol.

The only winchester ammo that was any good I tried it all was the Black box target ammo that was it and the red 100 packs.

Americian Egale in 308 has given me trouble so it seems to be brand and caliber that makes the diffrence. More then the firearm (ie I have lots of 308 rifles as well)

Winchester ammo has given me the most problems in all my rimfire rifles, followed by Federal. The only stuff I buy now is CCI and Hornady. I have never had an issue with the 525 bulk box and it has proven to be accuarate and reliable in all the rimfires I have used it in, except for the Remington 597 I had but that was a poor quality gun issue.
 
I wont buy winchester ammo of any kind. Shoots like crap in all my guns rim or center fire. After having a few 22lr cases blow up in my guns(winchester ammo) i will not buy again. Never had any problems with cci
 
My 10/22 with a Butler Creek steel lips eats anything I've tried.
No real problems with Winchester bulk 555, Xpert HV, or CCI Blazer.
I got an FTF once and took the cartridge apart after 3 tries, the primer had gone but the powder never did.

Maybe you got a Vegetarian 10/22?
Green ammo could work.
 
my 597 just loves winchester bulk stuff. my problem with cci's is price. I shoot my .22 because its cheap and save money in my ammo budget for .308

Federal bulk 525 here is $22.99 that is $.043 a round
Cci mini mags are $7.99 per 100 that is $.079 a round.
Either way you are not gonna go broke shooting cci or bulk

17 mach 2 is 7.99 per 50 that is $.16 a round
17 hmr is $15.99 per 50 that is $.32 a round.

Even with those 2 calibers it is hard to see someone going broke shooting them.

Cheap federal is ~$22 per 20. That is a little over $1 per round. Makes all rimfire look cheap doesnt it.
 
I've had good success with Winchester DynaPoint bulk. All my .22's seem to like it (especially my 10/22), so I only have to stock one brand of ammo.

As far as the red dot is concerned, I got one of the $39 Tasco RedDot jobs from Canadian Tire. It's bright enough for all conditions (even shooting basically straight into the sun), seems to be very solidly made (all metal), and holds zero even when I take it off & re-instal it. I accidentally left it on in the safe for a week, and that didn't seem to bother it - still works great.
