They show 3 ways to get a M305 with your barrel at 18.5 inch's . Two are factory versions and one is done by cutting a 22 inch barrel down and then rethreading the muzzle.

Top – Factory Norinco Shorty 18.5 in barrel ,Ultimak front rail , Eotech 511 red dot , USGI fiberglass stock, M1 Garand rear sights ,
Turner Saddlery sling, Springfield Armory muzzle brake , Unitized gas system , Rauch op rod spring guide

Middle – Dominion Arms Socom 18 (my newest addition)The first Socom I received looked great but jammed consistently while feeding....
Exchanged it and ... Very poor quality control on this build. All the old problems showed up again on this one.
And this was a replacement rifle on top of it all ....ouch.
Its missing the gas locking ring with front sight in the pic as they still make some with the sight base milled at an angle ( DUH ) . New one on the way.
I need that barrel vice of Barney,s as well because the barrel is over indexed too. .
So for now I installed an ordinary gas locking ring so I can test fire it tommorow.
After that gets that out of the way a set of Garand sights go on because as usual the rear sights are junk .
Then a new op rod spring guide go on and the barrel gets peened to tighten up the guide.
The tail of the gas piston was rubbing on the inside of the gas cylinder a bit . I had to smooth the surface just to get the piston to drop and to pass the tilt test . Firing a few rounds through it probably would have done the same thing .
Good thing I enjoy working on these ....
Not sure what stock I want to put on it yet .... CQDF (Close Quarter Deer Fighting ) comes to mind ..lol

Bottom – Norinco M-305, Promag Archangel stock ,Arms 18 scope mount. Arms 22 rings with throw levers , Bushnell 10 x scope ,
Gas locking ring with front sight, Harris bipod , upgraded the op rod spring guide.
It was a 22 inch barrel version and Doug at Ellwoods cut and recrowned the barrel to 18. 5 in long Then rethreaded it to 28 TPI x 50
I still need to get a muzzle brake for it

I like the stock on your Norc, with the camo pattern and the maple leaf on the stock. Good collection man, I'm jealous.

Nice! Can you provide more info on the 3rd rifles gas locking ring/front sight (ie. where can I get one). I'd like the same mod for my "shorty".

Sorry no idea who makes it .. it was on a used rifle that I purchased. Very similar to the Socom 18 version but this one has a gloss black finish .

Yah those are nice boomsticks... I am working on 2012 Norinco; so far I have a Sadlak see through scope mount, Black tactical Zombie slayer paint job maybe, but that is after the rest of the work I am going to do.

Chalkriver,
I got a chuckle when I read your post. I've got three short M14s and they're all the same as yours. Optioned out a bit different though.

Top: Cut down 22", threaded 1/2"-28 with bored out Vortex flash suppressor. USGI stock, ARMS 18 mount, NEA extended mag release, bolt stop, and spring guide. I've got a gas lock front sight for it, but took it off when I scoped it.

Middle: First version factory shorty with Vltor stock and rail, Rauch spring guide and Bushnell 6500 1.25-8x32.

Bottom: Latest version shorty. Fairly straight, rear sight windage is a PITA, functions 100%.

Nice collection. We've had our LMB muzzle brake out since the Summer although I notice that last build has a front sight base. The interesting part is that you can rotate our front sight base as you set up the LMB which precludes the need to re-index to re-align the front sight (unless you're experiencing other problems with the rifle and have no choice). Cheers.

One of those is on my list. Got any in stock?

How do you like the Vltor Stevo ??
I held a troy once and it was pretty beefy.

The handguard went on nice and straight, no issues with receiver geometry like you can get with side mounts.

I really like the stock. It's just a USGI with the adaptor and it feels no heavier than the USGI. Handles a lot nicer with the pistol grip too. The adjustable LOP is handy though I run it full short most of the time.

Love the Vltor, took a while to find. The quality is great.

Garry from bits and pieces used to make this product. Also I do believe the Dlask Arms makes something a little similar. I personally prefer it welded to the gas system. Thus never have to worry if its not lined up perfectly every time I adjust the gas lock. And yes I do adjust the gas lock cause sometimes I do not slow fire and notice that I get vertical stringing when shooting rapid groups with my gas lock on too tight.
