My 375 Ruger Alaskan***Update***

While 1.5" groups at 100 yards is certainly acceptable for a hunting rifle (back int he day a 2MOA hunting rifle was considered accurate!) you should find your group size shrink once you handload. The factory Hornady ammo I tried produced about the same accuracy from my rifle, but 270gr TSX, 260gr AB, 300gr AB all produce cloverleaf groups for me. I've found the .375 Ruger ridiculously easy to work up a load for...:)

Here is a picture of my load work up and a group fired wiht the 270gr TSX.

As you can see, on the top we have 6 shots, all with different powder charges. The last 4 powder charges are clustered into a group about 1" or a little less. The lower 3 shot group using 83.5gr H 4350 is under an inch. Load development with 9 shots and one paper target!:p

It's great to see more and more shooters recognizing the appeal of the .375 Ruger and the rifles it is housed in. They seem to be selling quite well, most likely matching (or quite a bit more) sales of .375 H&H chambered rifles. I am sure you will really like your rifle! :)

Thanks for the info Gatehouse. I looking forward to getting some bench time with the Ruger. Have not been shooting as much this year as I had hoped. At least I know my Ruger can be sub MOA with the right load. Your TSX load development target looks great.

I really like the looks of that gettup! If you want some bedding pointers for Rugers let me know, I played the game and think I made all of the mistakes. :p

Thanks Rem338, I may take you up on that offer. Like I said before I am a newbie at this bedding stuff, and any info that will make the job easier would be much appreciated.

Thanks for all the great comments and info guys :D Scott

Well after debating whether to bed my rifle myself or not, along with the time factor I decided to send the Alaskan to Rob Wise to do the work. I had him glass bed the action and install a Kick-Ez Pad on it. He did a very good job I think. LOP is 13.5". I went to the range today to try it out in a very rainy day. It shot pretty good with factory 270gr, but I picked up some Nosler 260gr AB for it. I hope to load some up shortly and really see what it will do with handloads and me operating it :D. I know that it can be a sub 1" shooter...Gatehouse has the target to prove that. I really like the Kick-Ez pad and will probably buy another for some of my other rifles. Here's some pictures from today. Enjoy

Like Gatehouse, I got around 1.5" groups with mine and the factory 270's. His load of 84 grains of H4350 behind the 260 grain Accubond went into 5/8" when I could hold on to it. My .416 Ruger Alaskan should be here next week. Can't wait to try her out and see what I can get it to do....
ps, I really like the look of yours. I like the laminate more than a synthetic. I may go the same way...

@Digger2: If it's not too much trouble, could you take a pic of the stock inletting and bedding with the action out?

Muchos gracias!

Good plan. I've bedded a number of rifles myself, but I wanted the 375 Ruger to be done perfectly, due to a bit more recoil than average, so I sent it to Guntech to get it done. I think it's a good investment. My Macmillan already came with a pad, but adding a kickeze to your stock is another good investment.

As Curt said, I got about 1.5" groups with the factory stuff,too- which is pretty good, actually. Handloads will shrink the groups up and as I've said before, the .375 Ruger is ridiculously easy to work up an accurate load!:D

I put one of those Boyds on my 375. Stock was compements of Kim Jepson. Many thanks to him. :)

I shortened the forend, and hollowed out the forend and butt to reduce weight. Decelerator was added. It's a good stock for this type of rifle. Ruger should use it on all their Alaskans.

Scope has since been replaced with a VXII 1.5x5.

Here is some pictures for you Silverado.Curt you will have to give a range report on your new toy when it comes in. I am going to load up some of Gatehouse's loads shortly and give them a whirl. Super Cub that is one fine shootin' iron, have you had the chance to take any animals with it yet? It's a 375 CT if I recall, correct? I really don't know a good bedding job from a bad one, but I thought this one was pretty decent, along with the recoil pad. Your guys thoughts....
Thanks Scott

Thanks ............ I shot a small moose with it last yr. Moose died as planned. :)

Yes, it is a 375 CT. I like it alot, but it would have been cheeper just to buy a Ruger and restock it.

Oh you two!! Bickering back and forth like an old married couple. SC is right, his is faster with 10% less powder.
Paul what did you back your load off to? Grain weight and resultant velocity difference.

What was wrong with the Hogue Rubber stock it came with??
Just curious/..I just bought one in 416 ruger and have yet to get it working. Had to be sent to warranty facility as it will not feed the ammo Hornady makes for it! Two rifles same thing!! Great for a dangerous game combo??!!

THe Boyds does look good though!!!

Very confidence inspiring. :runaway:
