Is that the one with the black coating? The one I originally was going to buy, had the black coated barrel but when I arrived they just so happen to had a shipment of SS ones, I chose the SS just cause. Either way I think they are a great gun. I am very happy with the Alaskan, and Rugers new triggers LC6 are pretty good. I am going to purchase a Hawkeye SS version in 35 Whelen very soon I hope and if it's performs like my Alaskan it will be a great gun.It should also look good sitting beside the 7600 35 Whelen carbine.:D I am really liking the 35 Whelen.

Scott,

I'm a very big fan of the .35 Whelen. The two I owned were amazing...no idea why I don't still have them.

Yes, mine is the black coated version...I just figured it would be something a little different. I'm sure looking forward to loading for it and shooting it. I intend to make up a "light" deer load and a balls-to-the-wall bear defense load for it. :)

nice gun...

When I see an Alaskan or African style rifle it makes me wonder.

What is the idea behind the iron sights?
Is it tradition?
A nod to the old days when scopes may have less reliable? A guy could pull off the scope in then field and save the hunt.

A nod to the old days when 30 06 was a long range round and more guys hunted with irons?

I suspect most guns get the scope mounted pretty quick. Never sighted in with just the irons.

Not trying to stir nothing here, just a question...
Nice gun.

Just a thought but I think they market it as a "dangerous game rifle" and I don't think anyone hunting such game would use a rifle without backup irons. Scopes fail, and always at the worst time.

My 416 Rigby is Irons only, shoots great with them.

I think the purpose of the open express style sights is for people who do very close up work with things that can kill them. I personally have sighted my Ruger with open sights and will use it in this years deer/bear hunt because I hunt in very heavy cover. I find that at close range targets easier to acquire with these particular open sights. That being said, I did shoot my buck last year at 12 feet with my 35 whelen topped off with a VXII 1-4. All of my rifles were glass, but I do sight my opens if equipped on the gun, for the "just in case factor". My personal opinion is that a lot more rifles should come with a good set of irons. The scopes and mounts of today are very durable, but if something was to happen to your scope and you loose your hunt because of it, you would of wished with you had some sort of back-up. Just my opinion.

Not having open sights is more a North American thing. Most European guns have open sights , no matter the caliber. That's the reason they also have the best quick detach mounts. This being guns used for hunting of course.

Scopes fail, even the best new ones, especially through accidents while hunting. If you fall and damage the scope, a bare barrel gun is useless. With open sights, you're still good to go. I wish more guns made here had open sights.

I wish there were a better selection of rifles on the market with open sights.

Other than BB guns, I didn't grow up around guns, and have almost always had a scope on my rifles, with 2 exceptions. Shooting iron sights well is a skill I am trying to develop.

I rarely like bolt actions with iron sights, since I am not going ot use the sights. But the Ruger sights are good, and I can see popping off the scope if I was to use the rifle in low light or digging out a bear in thick cover.

Some rifles just look "right" with open sights. Carbines, pumps, levers and DGRs come to mind. I know a certain fellow that just bought a 7600 Carbine and the first thing he did to it was to remove the sights. Looks awful bubba to me.

I generally don't use sights. A good set of sights from NECG plus installation would cost as much as a second back up scope. When I get around to it, I'm gonna have a second scope for my 375 as well as the bbl sights for back up.

I sighted my .375 Ruger last week making 1" @ 100 yds. My load is 80.0 grains of IMR 4350 with a 300 gr. Swift A-Frame bullet. There was no pressure signs at all. I've replaced the original matte stainless medium mounts by a set of lower matte blue mounts for my 2.5 X 8 Vari X-III because of my fancy side... :D

Scopes suck in heavy cover thus irons on dangerous game rifles.

Maybe true in extreme follow up situations, but my vote goes to the 1.5-5X (set on 1.5X) for the first shot every time.
In my opinion the low power scope makes it far easier to place an accurate shot in poor lighting conditions (black sight on a black bear in dark shadows).

Irons offer better situational awareness...A good thing while hunting cape buff, but (fun factor aside) I find them more of a hindrance than help in North American hunting.

Any idea what velocity you are getting with your load reason I ask is because I am loading 92grs IMR4350 with Swift A-Frames/Partitions/Gameskings in my 21" barreled 375RUM = 2640fps?

I'm curious what gains 12grs more powder give.

Off the top of my head I think I am getting 2625fps with a 300gr Accubond and 80gr H4350, different powder, I know.:)

How are they a hindrance?
Nothing says you have to have either open sights or scope, it's quite possible to have both.....

I set my 21" 375RUM up with a Leupold VX-3 2.5-8X36mm B&C scope with Leupold QRW rings and bases, when I remove the scope I install an XS Sights backup ghost ring sight on the rear base the front sight is a NECG Masterpiece banded sight with a special fiber optic partridge post that they brought in from their supplier in Germany for me.

So I have the best of both worlds a ghost ring for quick thick work while I am working as a prospector or going into the thick stuff after big game if it didn't drop instantly like my grizzly last year (it made it 75 yards into the thickest crap you could imagine) and the scope for when I'm hunting.

I think a low power scope is faster than ipen sights, even at close range, if you practice at it. A scope is a superior aiming system, allowing your eye to only focus on the target. Lift rifle, look through scope, drop crosshair on target and BOOM.

If it's dark and I was using a flashlight I might prefer the open sights, or if it was so thick and th shot so close that you really didn't need to aim, just get barrel/front site on target and shoot.

Both systems work.:p

CC, I get 2650 with 300 gr TSXs ahead of 90.0 grs of H-4350 in my Ultra.

I believe a low powered scope is superior to irons when things are up close and personal, but it doesn't really matter which you choose provided you are equally comfortable with both. If its foggy, raining, or snowing I'm more inclined to use irons, but after much consideration I have concluded that shooting my Ultra with the ghost ring is decidedly unpleasant due to the high-ish comb on the McMillan.
