So yesterday myself, jonandad, blacksmithden, and a few other members hit the range in Vegreville Albertee. I took 5 rifles with me with new loads and figured to try and have at least a good range day...The wind was gusting at 25 k and it was a friggen cross wind also and twisting at 9 am when I got there and I figured oh friggen great. Cause I really wanted to try some loads out in my .223 and .204 I thought I was hooped. But I tried..

best I could do with that rifle in the morning...new load and powder and such..

So I jumped to the .204 and thought oh well, lets give it a try in this friggen wind...here are the results...

|Not bad for 32 grain slugs getting whipped around in a cross wind.Shot my 338/378 WB and wasnt really happy with the results of 1.25 inch groups ...but mehh its a work in progress me thinks. Had a bite to eat then it was time for some bigger stuff. ( Cant shoot on a empty stomach) So out came the new to me .416 Rigby. I love big bores and thats all I shoot so it was time to test this one out for s**ts and giggles...well hot damn low and behold my first load of a 400 grain slug at 2400 fps did this..

All shots were off the bench and witnessed by 4 ppl and at 100 yards...gotta love my new varmint rifle...:D

I used to live in Veg and spent plenty of time at that range. I love how the #7 tee on the golf course is only about 200 yards from the firing line.

I liked to go there with my braked 300 UM and sometimes just for s11ts and giggles I would wait till a golfer was at the top of his backswing before squeezing one off!

Very nice groups btw.

WOW Ice that is some nice grouping you have there...but do you think you could duplicate those groups with no wind?!?!?! ;) thanks for the pics

Nice! What kind of optics are you guys running on your 416's? I would like to see how mine would shoot with a 10 or 14 power scope replacing the 4 power.

Very nice there Prosper...good shootin eh..:)

I've been cataloging my targets and load data from the past couple of years. I've come to two realizations: 1. some of my guns are much more accurate than I remember them being, and 2. I need to get out shooting and doing load refinement a lot more. Tweaking handloads really makes rifles shine. It feels really really good to find a load that shoots consistently well for a finicky gun.

Fortunately, that 378 didn't require much effort at all. In fact, those two loads are the first two I tried - I didn't see much point trying to improve on them. The 378 is a ton of fun to shoot... but not off bags at a bench.

Some time we need to go out and shoot the 500 from the bench. I've never been able to work up enough courage to try that, I've only ever shot it offhand, and it makes you feel a little punch drunk after 4 or 5 rounds even so. First you get a shot of adrenaline that's energizing and exciting. Then you notice that your hands are shaking. Two or three shots later, and your whole body is tense and it's really really really hard to keep the target in the crosshairs. After 5 shots, your knees are weak and your whole body is trembling and you can hardly walk in a straight line anymore.

Sadly, I do not currently posses a 416 (yet...)

I have a Burris 3-9x40 on the 378 and it works fine. Eye relief is over-rated if you have good shooting form and a stock that fits you correctly. And it provides instant negative re-enforcement if you let your technique get sloppy for even one shot...

I am currently using a 1-4.5 scopechief on my .416. My .460 is wearing a 2.5x8 scopechief and both are holding up real well...

I gotta try that 500 A-Square one of these days. My shoulder is back in shape, just dont know how the rest of my body would take it!!! That thing would fling my body around like a wet noodle on the end of a mop..:D...GOTTA TRY IT...Gotta TRY IT...
