i had a matching numbers No5mk1 rifle but the barrel had been turned down, it was missing the flash hider and the lower wood was cut off. i was going to restore it, and i may still do it some day but for now I'm leaving it a sporter and installing a Winchester barrel on it.
i made a thread adapter, 13/16-20tpi ID and 1"-14tpi -55* and installed it on a model 92 Winchester barrel in 25-20 and then realized the rifle would be a lot cooler chambered in a bigger round and i then changed out the barrel for a Winchester model 92 barrel chambered in 44-40
i had to install a delrin bushing on the barrel to hold the upper hand guard band place, basically a plastic knox forum. and then i filed out the extractor grove on the barrel and had to take a bit off the extractor it self to make it go over the rim easier, it would without touching the extractor but its a lot smoother now
i also cut the barrel down to 19" from 24" and installed a no1 front sight.
I'm not sure what i will use this rifle for but i have dies, cast bullets and 100 brass on the way. i plan to try out some 300gr bullets , 250gr and 200gr to see what gives me the best groups (looking for 6" groups at 100m) also since this is build on a No4 action i may try and work up to using 44 MAG loads, ill see how the barrel likes them.
it was just a Sunday project, i starter this morning and finished this afternoon, i need the correct sized lead before i can try it out.
edit; the pic where you can read 44-40 on the brass looks odd, the case wasn't all the way chambered
