I just made my first purchase here on GNUTS and I'm very pleased with the results.

A Marlin Stainless Guide Gun in 45/70. It looks almost brand new with a scratch on the forestock and a couple scratches on the reciever but nothing to worry about.

Thanks to Khonhd for taking care of this before selling it.

I can't wait to hit the range this weekend. It'll be just the ticket for a moose trip I have in mind for this fall.

Welcome to the .45-70 club. You'll soon understand why some of us get downright ornery about arguing the virtues and the flexibility of this great old classic caliber. If you handload, you'll also see pretty soon why many of us consider the G a close quarters, life defending rifle - it can really pack a wallop on both ends with that short barrel! I use my XLR a lot, from 900 fps Blue Dot loads to ground-shaking BIG critter loads.......have fun!

My first deer was shot with a Winchester Model 1886 Extra Light Weight .45-70.They are a fun rifle to shoot and reload for.

Sorry it took so long but I spent the last 4 days at the range working with this new beauty and my Savage .243 in Prince Albert.

No pics from the range because I forgot my camera but with a 380 grain cast bullet with a gas check over 52 grains of Varget, we were getting 2-3 inch groups at 100 yards with the Peep sights. At 200 I could ring the gong 3 out of 4 times. It was pretty windy this weekend.

I tried some heavier bullets but the groups just opened up.

BEAUTIFUL GUN. I would hate you if I wasn't so jealous of you. Been looking at the Marlin 1894 Cowboy that shoots the 45/70 as my big game rifle when I decide to get one. Would you recommend it after shooting your 45/70?

I chose the GG because of its length and it certainly causes a significant increase to the muzzle jump and recoil. After over 100 rounds in just a couple days I'm feeling it today... however, when you're hunting you only shoot once... well maybe twice. So it doesn't really matter.

My idea is that I'll appreciate the difference when I'm pushing bush or I have to strap it to my ruck sack while hiking to my site.

I believe the Cowboy has the 26 inch barrel? It is a very nice rifle. I would suggest a Marlin in 45/70 to any full grown man or woman. If that works for you and your intended purpose, I would suggest it.

But consider this... what's easier carrying a baseball bat or a canoe paddle through the woods?

Good luck with your decision and be sure to post it here when you make up your mind.

I know the cowboy has a 26" barrel well its a little longer then I like 24" I'm none to fond of the look of a tubular magazine that doesn't match the length of the Barrel there are some other guns there but I believe they only shoot 30/30 or pistol ammo and one or two 308s. But this decision is a few months away as I'm sending away my application in the next day or two if I pass my RPAL today.

The Marlin 45/70 Cowboy gun is actually the model '95 not '94.......I didn't see anyone out at the PA range when i was there, too bad because I had a pile of different loads to test including a new 420 gr. LFN GC going 2100fps....it sure was fun shooting the .458 Win. Mag. after that battering.

Only ever had the opportunity to fire one 45-70. Winchester 86 (i think) long octagonal barrel, heavy as h**l and with the hanloads the owner had made, about like firing a 20 gauge shotgun, with a lot more thump out front. Now thanks to him (I blame him entirely) I want one!!! Now I'm just jealous.

checked out the 45/70 cowboy at Wholesales BEAUTIFUL GUN not as hard to aim as I thought in the standing position better when I was using the Counter as a prop though. Loved the fit of the gun as it was perfect for me but hated the action it was to say the least stiff and jumpy. I had to REEF the sucker down with the butt on the table as I couldn't work it with out the barrel jumping all over the place it in any other position. The guy behind the counter had some trouble closing it too. Still willing to consider it as I was told the action would get smoothed out, but DAMN thats one action I'm not to fond of.

My 45/70 is slick as owl ####, when it was new it may have been a little stiff but nothing like you describe, maybe you saw a bad one or something.

Very nice 45-70. Congrats! I'm a big fan of the caliber too. I have one 45-70 that I bought on here as well, a Winchester 1886 rifle. Heavy as heck, but it is deadly accurate with Remington factory loads. Very many options for reloading too. I'd like to find a nice Win 86 lightweight or xrta LW though as, like I said, though I love the looks of the rifle, carrying this one in the woods for a day is very tiresome.
Hope you have fun with it!
Matt
