Well my springfield trapdoor 45 70 pistol showed up today and the things in EX condition.
the lock is like new still and everythings nice and tight.
Man this thing is a Canon cant wait to go put a few Pyrodex loads thru it.
Bores ex to. Very cool Perscribed Antique :D







 
Cough, pyrodex, I wouldn't use that crap for firecrackers let alone a nice piece like that.
It's nasty stuff, get some real black powder and feed that pistol what it deserves.

Well i agree with ya its messy stuff but its what i got= Pyrodex.

Unless someone knows of a mild smokeless load in the 45 70 with say Unique!
I got some 400 gr bullets lubed and ready to load.

I was thinking like 8 grs of unique as thats a 45 colt load with Mooncoons dryer lint to keep it back against the primer.

Any ideas for a safe smokeless load ??? i got lotsa Trail Bose to.
 
45/70 trapdoor

i use 12 grs unique wiuth a 350 gr cast bullet =+ 1/2x1/2inch pillowstuffing, it goes about 1050 fps from my guide gun, you should look at trapdoor loads in the lyman loading manual so you dont get something that will hurt you,, wade

The lyman cast bullet book 3rd edition only lists UNIQUE loads for the 1895 marlin and Ruger rifles. No 1873 loads.

For STRONG ACTIONS they say 9.5 grains under a 322grain cast bullet gives 9600CUP

Raising the dose to 14.5 grains gives 24,000 CUP

IN STRONG ACTIONS A 420grain bullet over 11.00 grains of UNIQUE is listed at 16,800 CUP. 13.5 grains brings it to 27,200 CUP



ALL OF LYMANS 1873 loads are under 17 000 CUP most in the 15 000 range, So 11 grains of unique under that 400 grain bullet is approaching or at your max load.
What about trail boss?

Thanks for that Load Data.
i figger 8 grs to start as thats a decent load in a 45 colt so i will start there and work up.
Be easy clean up compared to Pyro.
This thing is well made and in Ex shape.
Im not gona use the TB as its to hard to come by and i want it for my 45 Colt loads.
 
Well i shot the Pistol it was a blast big clouds of Blue smoke LOL
I went with a Pyro load and wheatlets 405 gr bullet and fired 4 shots into less than 3 inches at 25 yds about 3 inchs low of dead center.

Thats amazing accuracy from rds i just threw together with my hand loader no cardbord wads just a bit more than half a case of pyro then some weatlets then seated the bullets.
The gun dont kick bad at all. Be great for shooting stuff off horse back like they did in the 1800s. :D

Trail Boss..45/70

Last week was at the range testing Trail Boss in 45/70..223..308..30/06.

For the 45/70 I used the load data off of the IMR/Hogdon site.

13.0 grains TBoss...400 grain Lee FBase......941..937..934 FPSecond
14.0 grains TBoss....951...965..933 fps
15.0 grains TBoss....1021..994..1008 fps

500 Gr Lee gas check

13.0 grains TBoss...863..852..865 fpsecond
14.0 grains TBoss...905..906..895 fps

500 Lyman Spitzer flat base

13.0 grains TBoss...837..828..839 fps

Trail Boss is not available out here either so I ordered 4 pounds from Higginsons in Ontario @ about $24 per pound.....thats per pound ,not just 4 Hogdons containers that each hold much less than a pound due to the bulkiness of Trail Boss Powder..

No they don't have much data there at the IMR/Hogdon site and definately none for the 50/70...
They never had any for the .223..308.30/06 either so I just started with their posted 30.30 data with 160 gr cast bullet and slowly built up a load in the 308/30-06...and started at 30% case volume and worked up in the .223. If you 'r interested I posted the results on the Reloading forum.

For the 50/70 , depending on your bullet weight, ie: 400 grains Lead/wwts. start at the low end of the 400 gr 45/70 data and work up half grain at a time if its an old gun and you should be fine.

Have an IMR/Hodgdon booklet 2006 Re: Trailboss powder useage:

"Trail Boss occupies from 50% of available case capacity up to 100% case capacity. A double charge of the maximum loads will either overflow the case or will not exceed SAAMI proof pressure depending upon the cartridge being loaded."
" Velocities were limited to approximately 1600 fps due to excessive leading at higher velocities. If you want to use any other cartridge, contact us for advice at 913-362-9455"

None of the loads in my booklet goes beyond 1400 fps (25-35 win) and the rest of the specified cartridges are under 1200 fps.....so no doubt you can go higher if you feel the need.......they also stated no fillers nor compressed loads are adviseable as it will increase pressures.

About 15 pistol cartridges and 6 rifle cartridges are listed on their Website for Trail Boss and its the same info as in my booklet..

.........good luck with the 50/70 and TrailBoss, I will be trying "cast " loads in the 30.30/.308/.30/06 in up comeing weeks

teapot i loaded Pyrodex in my cases and 405 gr bullets this action is the exact same as the 1873 Springfield Trapdoor 45 70 rifles so whatever they can handle so can this but im to to sure about the shooter tho :D

gun is SOLD PF so im not gona get into prices. but there rare and they aint cheep!
