Tried it last week in the cold and 2 out of 3 rounds wouldn't go off, very light firing pin mark. Tried it again today at the heated indoor and same thing untill something blew apart in the trigger assembly and ended my range trip.

I'll think twice next time I'm looking at a Remington.

I sold mine a month after I got it. Not that I had any failures that weren't ammo related but I just thought it felt cheap and takedown was a nightmare. All those little screw made me nervous. Strip one and your f$&ked. I have since bought a 9mm AR 15 much happier. I gave up on finding something non restricted. I had a cz 858 but cleaning up after corrosive ammo was a pain considering how much I shot it.

some folks don't think so, I are not one of them :D:rockOn:

me niether. once you play with the mags a bit and find the ammo that YOUR particular 597 likes, they are amazing little .22s.

I prefer my 597 to all my friends 10/22. even tho they are the most widely used .22, i still think they feel cheap. But that's just me.

to the OP, im sorry about your 597, what ammo/mags were you running?

If you think a 10/22 feels "cheap", my god what does a 597 feel like!?

it feels like last shot bolt hold open......stock. and enjoyment. since i figured out what ammo it likes (597) i haven't had a problem. The 10/22 feels rattly to me, I dont know how to explain it, if it makes your feel any better, I own a mini 30 and would swear my life to ruger just from that.

(1) Did you do the thing with the rails? :yingyang:

(2) The .22 pumps, .22 bolt-actions and the Speedmaster are unbelievably amazing, though....:)

i got 5 597s and still looking for more...
rifle has its flaws ,some come out of the box awesome some need a little work and it can be made awesome. VQ upgrades , minor sanding and adjusting and you are set. i think the greatest problem it has is the fact that scope rail mount screws strip out way too easy.
mind you vtr may not be my choice...like someone said too many screws to loose and pain to take apart.
your vtr may not fire right cause it may not close the bolt all the way that is the rails too tight, also they may need to be sanded slightly to have mirror finish. and careful...too much sanding may take the chrome finish off and wreck them.
lets not get into 597/1022 debate please ( its all personal opinion anyway ) instead help this guy fix his rifle.

When it comes to semi autos I am to devoted to Ruger, the 10/22 will ALWAYS be first by far in my books, I would rather spend more to make my 10/22 look like an AR with a body kit rather then spend the 500 on a VTR. Sorry Remington semi auto lovers this is just my personal preference, if you love yours all the more power to you.

Bought a 597 VTR in Oct.
It was replaced with another within the month.
Second works flawlessly, and eats any type of ammo I feed it.

The wife is into Trap, so I am selling it, in order to get her a Trap Gun. Otherwise, I would keep it.

Just got one for Xmas. Had a few jams, but I think 95% of the problem was the fact i was using the 30rd remington mag (which needs worked in). The stock 10rd mag seems to work fine. Put about 200rds through it so far, and have only had a handful of issues. I'm hoping these will go away completely as I break the gun in more.

Shipped mine off the the warrenty depot last week and they don't cover shipping to get it there of course. I figure it will be a while before I hear anything since they are closed this week.

VTR issue

I had a some feeding issues with mine as well until I came across another site describing the same problem and their solution. Apparently some have the bolt guide rods too tight causing them to bow slightly, affecting the bolt travel. The suggested solution there was to loosen them off, tighten them just to the point of contact, and then back them off 1/4 turn. I did this to mine, and I haven't had a single issue since.

Aren't all 597's junk?

No. My friend has put probbaly 6 bricks though his 597 SS and has not had a single issue. I bought one recently and have put 100 rounds though it with no problems. It eats all types of ammo without problems, fairly accurate and the stock sights are actually decent.

My 597 just needed to be oiled and the 30 round magazine broken in. I don't load it more than 25 now, and the 3rd last round doesn't feed. O well, it was cheap and I still like it. I have probably fired 8+ bricks out of it this year.

I finally got my 597 LSS shooting like a dream, buggy rifle though.
A Volquartsen extractor is a must, and a hammer by the same reduced my trigger pull to 2.75 lbs. I had the same issue with the light pin stikes. I actually gave the bolt face a light rub with a die grinder and cured that problem. Also found the trigger wouldent release on occassion, so I took a little shave of the rubber bumper so the bolt can come back to hit the release. seems to hate winchester ammo too. something we both have in common

Good to hear you got yours working but it doesn't seem right that a brand new gun needs that much work to make it shoot.

Still waiting to hear anything from the warrenty depot.
