Thats right .. not only am I 'that guy' at the range who crawls around the benches picking up every little spec of brass he can find, but now I've started 'cleaning up' discarded FTF's.

I found at the range some .223 rem rounds with very light primer strikes. They must have been sitting around the range for some time because they were very very dirty.

Their headstamp is SB MC 223 .. its a FMJ w cannalure round that looks like some sort of military surplus. Does anyone know what this round is?

Anyhow, I brought them home, and let them sit for about 2-3 months. I finally pulled them out today and though how much fun it would be to 'mexican match' them.

I pulled the bullets, pop'ed the primers, chanfered the mouth and primer pocket, brasso'ed them clean (also brasso'ed the bullets to remove the corrosion off the copper), reprimed them with a CCI # 400, dumped all the powder back into each case (which looked like very fine and shiny ball powder), seated the bullet to its original size and used a lee factory crimp to fix the bullet.

I must say, how much fun that was :) :) But I think I am now an 'addict' on some level

Here are some pics:

I wish I had time to measure the powder weight, and the bullet weight. I'm assuming the FMJ round (which was surprisingly not a BT) to be 55 grain.

So, am I the only one who does this?! Is there anything I should be worried about after cleaning up these rounds? I originally got the idea of doing this after reading about vietnam snipers 'mexican matching' by pulling bullets and replacing just the bullets with more accurate ones.

Wow, I thought the economy was BAD out HERE!!!
You don't happen to "dumpster dive" for your next lunch do you? :D
I think Duck is right..you may have a problem.

Reloading spent brass from the range is one thing...but....

Sadly, it was 7 rounds .. not just three .. but it was still fun to tear down a factory load and see what makes 'er tick!

That's awesome slushee, totally the kind of thing I would do, heh.

I did something similar for a buddy, who wondered if it was possible to have an "all-silver" 10mm round. I bought a few boxes of Remingtons with the nickel cases, a few bags of Winchester Silvertip bullets, pulled the Rems and reloaded the resulting powder and bullets into other cases and topped the nickel cases with Silvertips.

Ta-daaa!

You might want to make mention to someone at your range that people are leaving live rounds on the floor etc... CFO comes for an inspection I wouldn't be surprised if they would shut the range down. Dont they have a container made to safely dispose of rounds that are failure to fire? I know alot of people are going to think I am crazy but there is no excuse for leaveing failure to fire or even live rounds cough cough haaaO.P.P. on the floor is just careless. I sometimes its an accident but when you find quarter a box of 40's lieing in the scrap brass its just careless. Good for me because sometimes I find them and get half a box free :D

sadly this is the fourth time i've found live rounds laying out in the grass. I reported the previous three times so I am sure the higher ups know.

I should bring it up at our next meeting as well just to be absolutly sure.

I have been doing this for a while too as I am recycling for a range. Sometimes sampler rounds get dumped or reference rounds etc. If they are reloads I pull the bullets and decap carefully then sell the brass. Another season like this and I will have enough bullets to sell for plinkers. I can size and weigh them accurately enough for that but there has been a lot in the bucket lately. More in the brass donated by members for the club. What else can I do with it if I do not shoot the cal and would I trust someone elses loads anyways? I have about a cup of powder to play with too.
