Well today after much debating I took the day off school in search of my first whitetail. To make it more special, I really wanted to take it with a bow. I am very proficient with my bow but nothing prepared me for today. Starting the morning I had a nice 4 point young buck blazing around the field nose to the dirt, zig zagging from one side of the field to another. He was in no doubt searching for does as the rut is about peak in my area. I grunted a couple times to get his attention but he just high tailed it and continued on his way in search of ladies.
After lunch I relocated to the ground and tucked myself on the side of a marsh with a well traveled deer trail across from me (30 yards) crosswind. I saw two does come quickly into view in the edge of an alfalpha field. I see what I think is a third doe running around after them. My old buddy is back and this time in hot pursuit of some does!
So I get ready and draw back as the two does pass the shooting lane and I am waiting on the buck........ what feels like forever passes and he doesn't come. I lost him. So I let bow down easy and then I see him dart past my shooting lane trying to catch up with his ladies. I panicked to try and get him to come back and desperately let out a grunt. Well, he stops dead in his tracks and spins around! He blitzes me comes head on till about 10 yards no joke. We had a good little staring match with me at full draw and him head on.
So I try and hold it as long as I can waiting for him to quarter a bit or best case get bored and slowly rotate so I can let one rip through him. No such luck, he takes another step forward makes out what I am and outright disappears. Turned on the spot and was off again. No chance for a shot.
So today, he wins. I have seen a larger one in the area, which would be nice, but not entirely what it is to me at this point. Any deer is going to be a good deer for me, and I am convinced I want to mount it if I get one no matter the size as a keepsake.
Anyways, Anyone got a way to get out of that predicament I was in with a deer head on?
Thanks for listening to my story!
