My Bell & Carlson Tactical modification thread.

Nice job Magnum
Mind me asking why do you have 'putty/body filler' on the hand grip? are you going to widen/thicken it?

Nice job man.

The forearm is actually 3 cedar shims and a lot of Bondo automotive body filler. The last stock I did like this I used the Bondo fiberglass, and like I see you've figured out too it is awful to work with. Thought I'd try just the regular Bondo this time. It is a bit better to work with.

I don't think I'll widen it and more. It is already 2.5 inches and I plan on carrying it around some, so I want it to be mobile. I will fill the butt will Bondo too once I get it all done until I feel that it is balanced 100% with the heavy barrel.

I really like your B&C stock with the mods. I always liked that stock except for the ugly forearm. Too bad they don't make that in a 110 action. There actually are very few tactical stocks that are made in the 110 action. Stockade makes some nice ones, including an A5 clone, but they won't ship to Canada.

If I could find one for a good price I would do it. I do like the one I have one it right now but wish it has the tilt feature.

Thanks man :)

Keep your eyes peeled. Versapods are about the same price as Harris bipods and they're lighter than the Parker Hale's because they're made out of aluminum, although steel models do exist.

I picked up a "chinese parker hale clone" in the EE a couple of years ago for $80. When it showed up it was a real deal Parker Hale complete with the bottom rail off a C3.:D

Thanks Leg.
So I'm guessing Versapods are the same design as Parker Hale bipods? Whats the main difference between the two? Aren't Parker Hale the ones that come off the military spec rifles?

BTW: how do you like Petawawa? are you in the CF?

I like Petawawa quite a bit, find it a little crowded though so I moved out to the sticks. Yes, I'm CF, Infantry.

Parker Hales are indeed the bipod used with the C3A1, although a lot of the guys I know use the Harris swivel bipods, not sure why.

The Timberwolf comes with an adaptor to use the Parker Hale bipod, but they shipped with Harris, and because the bipod is technically part of the rifle's kit the PH's stay with the C3's so even if you wanted to use it you couldn't.

Versapods are indeed PH clones. I have no experience with them but I hear that they compare quite well with the PH, epecially considering the price. Biggest difference would be that most Versapods are aluminum and some models can adjust the friction of the pan and tilt, think they're made in China. Believe some models of Versapod have been adopted for use in the US military but I can't back that up.

Any updates since Thursday? Have you textured yet?

I am going there in a hour to just finish doing some sanding on the front end that I sort of messed up on, then I will be applying Marine-tex for the finish.
I'll post pictures of course haha

Thanks man, I've put in my application for 3RCR or 1RCR so hopefully I'll be out there, looks like a nice place to live.

I'll look into the Parker Hale Bi-pods, reason I never bought it initially is because I thought they were all expensive, but I'll try to see if I can find a deal :D

Devcon Plastic Steel is close enough.

Alberta Tactical Rifle sells Versapods. The standard models are ParkerHale clones. The new models with the motion control knobs are what PH's would be if they went to school.

I can't buy marine-tex around here...

boo

PM me if you want to know where to buy Marine-Tex.

I'll look around/browse forums for a versapod or parker hale bipod. I'm sure I can find it much cheaper then what it would cost there.

Small update: Started sanding down the front part of the stock where I had to put some extra PC-7 to fix one of my mistakes, and after sanding a bit the epoxy is still soft so I need it to sit and dry for a few days more before I sand it, then texture it.

Not much of a update but on Friday when I was planning on doing the texture I was sanding down the PC-7 and went a bit too much on the tip of the stock making it way to curved and I didn't like the screw up, so I had to put a few layers of PC-7 on the tip, let it cure and sanded it down today.

Got it perfectly smooth this afternoon but I wanted to lay some fiberglass resin on top to give it a nice hard coat.

Here are the pics before the fiberglass. I put on the last coat of resin 2 hours ago so I'll be going back on tuesday, sanding it down properly then applying the Marine-tex for the texture.

Here is a picture of the tip before when I sanded it down too much:

here is is after the PC-7 waiting for the resin to be laid on.

Well the texture is complete.

Got to the stock today, finished sanding the fiberglass and made sure everything is nice and even, then prepared it for M-tex.

Marine-tex is awesome to use. I layed it on the section I wanted it textured and after a min or two I used a zip-lock bag to get the texture.

The product is perfect for this, applys easily, cleans off without a problem and hardens fairly quick at a good temperature.

Spent about 30 min trying to figure out how I wanted to tape off the rifle.

Think I did a decent job.

Now paint after and the stock modifications are done for now :)

Great pictures starting to look put togeter. So did you use the ziploc bag like a crumple up newpaper to get that texture?

Well I've read that people use paper towels and just 'dab' the marine-tex, but the paper towels tend to break up and get stuck.

So a few people have tried zip-lock bags and they are great.

I used 2 bags and you just put your hand in it, tighten the bag so you have a good grip and start dabbing the marine-tex until you get a nice texture. Since it's still a bit moist, it will settle down again but I recommend dabbing it a bit more after 20 min then removing the tape 10 min later.

Hope this helps.

I am going to post the whole thing soon. I have it done and painted. I just am waiting on a recoil lug and then I will spin the barrel and bed the action. I painted it straight OD. I like OD.

I never did do the butt hook tho. Like you I figured I'd push my luck too far.

i hate to chime in and here ..... BUT ... i am gonna bet that the epoxy is still soft inside your stock.... and will no doubt continue to soften. I could be wrong... but i do what yer doin every day ;) Bondo fiberglass products are polyester based..... PC7 is epoxy. A barrier coat MUST be applied over epoxy before a polyester product can be applied to it.... or the polyester/epoxy blending causes a chemical reaction that destroys the epoxy

for guys wanting to play with thier fiberglass stocks..... go to a plastics or marine shop. PC7 is a good product, as is marine fix fast from goop. System 3 eopxy resins can be purchased in small repair size.... perfect for this application, from most fiberglass/marine/plastics retailers. Use the same cloths as you used, or kevlar sheeting if you can get it. Wait 2 or 3 days prior to sanding for a full cure.
I don't play a custom stock maker on T.V. , I am one in real life hehehe :D

Thanks for the comments!
Well as you can see, it's already too late to do any changes so it has to stay as it is. I'm guessing the stock right now if probably more 'complete' with those large air pockets removed then before.

I wish I knew of other products I could have used but too late. Maybe the next stock that I will do haha:D
