First of all before anyone starts with the no picture thing my wife is out of town with the camera and this is not the new world record it is just a big doe. However,
Last year I took my son out hunting for deer for the first time and he missed a shot with his muzzle loader and never had another chance. This year again he had no chances with his muzzle loader so we headed out today in rifle season. We left the house around 2 pm to hunt the evening at our favourite spot. We had been there for about 20 minutes when deer began to trickle out feeding. They were pretty far ( 400 plus yards ) so we snuck behind a row of bales and closed the distance as much as we could. At the end of the bale stack we set up and waited. The deer were still too far so I told him to be patient and we might get lucky.
He was the shooter as I am down to one rifle because of the f'ing TC venture recall. Anyway he schooled me on patience tonight. I told him to take the shot only if he was sure and steady. The deer were at about 250 yards and he set up for the shot and I waited and waited and waited..... He just whispered to me he was not sure yet. I reassured him that it was no problem to wait, pass on the shot, or even walk away. So we waited. ( Going on 30 minute plus now). Then another deer steps out of the bush line and comes along the fence line and stops at 80 yards. ( Right on !!!!!!) He lines up but does not shoot ?????? He whispers I'm waiting for a broadside shot. The deer begins moving farther away and he is on her but does not shoot. Finally it stops to feed at 140 yards broadside. Bang!!!! right through the heart and the deer drops in its tracks. Now imagine two fools jumping around and hollering right about now.
I knew I'd only have one chance to see my son ( 14 years old ) take his first deer and he made me proud. Very few adults I know would of had that patience. I left it up to him when to pull the trigger and he was willing to go home with nothing than risk a bad shot. I think I'll call him cool hand Luke.
After guttting and loading I asked why he waited so long as he had many opportunities for a shot. He said " My heart was pounding in my chest and I couldn't stay steady " Well he was steady enough to make a perfect 140 yrd shot on his very first deer. Tonight was the cake of my entire hunting life ( going on 30+ years of hunting) everything from now on is only icing.
Gun: 7 08 vanguard S2
Load: 140 gr Ballistic tip. Bullet broke apart but did its job by turning the heart to jello and little to no meat damage other than the rib cage.
It was just a big doe and sorry no pics till tomorrow but I thought I'd post today because I'm just one proud dad right now.
