I was doing some load development for my .221 Fireball, and had finally got some IMR 4227 powder (thanks Dusty 61!)
Anyways I loaded up a bunch of ammo with a starting load of 16.8 gr of 4227 and 40 gr Nosler BTs, also loading some with 17.0 and 17.2 grains of powder.
So I was at the shooting club yesterday, shooting on the outdoor range using one of those "indoor" .22 cal targets at fifty yards to see how the various loads worked. The first couple groups with the 4227 showed promise, but nothing special. Then along came a fellow who I knew would ruin my concentration, and who would jiggle the hell out of the shooting bench, so I rapped through my second last string of three, and sure enough, over comes Jim with all of his usual questions and before he could set up, I told him I just had one last group of three to shoot.
So with him yakking in my ear and me pretty well resigned to coming back later, I shot my last three loaded rounds from a fairly warm barrel. Jim was spotting and told me I was hitting way low (he was looking at the aiming target in the middle of the page that I had used with some forgotten load to zero a scope). I could see through my rifle scope that there was just one hole in the target, so I invited him to come up and look at it with me. Let's say that both of us were impressed.
I have shot lot of cloverleafs in my life, but I am not at all a bech rest shooter and never had a "hole in hole" target before. That one for a three shot group of .224 cal bullets measures 0.265"
I reckon I have found my sweet load for that rifle.....
