Well folks, it's going to be hard to beat this one.

Taken yesterday at 18:10 with a T/C Omega.

I had been watching a doe for around an hour poke around the woods, when all of a sudded she took off with her tail between her legs. I knew there was a buck close by and waited anxiously. He appeared and I just about had a heart attack. I watched him for around 10 minutes, waiting to get an optimal broadside shot, all the while my heart going at around 1000 beats a minute. When the wind shifted from north to south, he caught a whiff of me and the tail began to twitch. With a combination of fading light and a shifting wind, I knew it was then or never. I had a less than perfect shot, he was facing me at around 45 degrees. I aimed for the near front shoulder, and hit about 2 inches back. Luckilly, the bullet (Hornady XTP) shredded the liver and he was down within about 50 yards.

We searched for about an hour before we found him as it was pitch dark by the time I got back to the area with my light. I was not sure it was even a hit, as all I found was a patch of hair... no blood! I began doubting myself, as there was so much smoke after the shot I did not see his reaction to the shot. It seemed like an eternity, and I contemplated giving up the search until the morning. Then I saw the rack in the distance, and I knew the search was over.

Im debating whether to get the head mounted. Does anyone know of a good taxidermist in the Quebec/eastern Ontario region?

Good luck in the coming weeks guys!

Nice deer!!!!!

the closest taxidermist I know of is in Fleurimont, in the eastern townships... probably too far for you tho... I'm sure there are closer ones than that.

Where were you hunting at?

Ste-Justine/ St-Polycarpe area?

Thanks for the kind words guys.

It was shot at around 75 yards, maybe a bit less. It was taken in the Mont-Laurier/Maniwaki area of Quebec, about 3 hours north of Montreal.

As for the taxidermist... if he does good work I will travel quite a distance. The guy my dad used was around 2 hours away (eastern townships too I believe), but he passed away recently, so we are searching for a replacement who does quality work. Distance is not an issue, but must be within reason.

Im not a fan of amateur taxidermy jobs and would rather just mount the rack if I can't find anyone.

Another question, when they do a headmount, do they keep the rack attached to a portion of skull? Or do they screw the individual antlers on to the mould or whatever...

congrats.... i hope i get that lucky this weekend....

we are a group of 3 hunters, with 2 doe liscense's in our group. Make's for a good ratio, should get lucky... i've been driving up north (north of laval) every weekend for nearly 2 months now, to drop off 3 bags of apples, 1 or carrots and 15 kilos of corn.... with plenty of tracks and not a trace of food wasted .... our chances are looking good....

good luck to everyone these next couple weeks, and good hunting!!!

They should keep the skull otherwise it is disqualified from scoring. Why not a skull mount? It is easier, takes up less space and looks nice (IMHO). With the $ you save you could buy a Stevens 200!
