Well folks, it's going to be hard to beat this one.
Taken yesterday at 18:10 with a T/C Omega.
I had been watching a doe for around an hour poke around the woods, when all of a sudded she took off with her tail between her legs. I knew there was a buck close by and waited anxiously. He appeared and I just about had a heart attack. I watched him for around 10 minutes, waiting to get an optimal broadside shot, all the while my heart going at around 1000 beats a minute. When the wind shifted from north to south, he caught a whiff of me and the tail began to twitch. With a combination of fading light and a shifting wind, I knew it was then or never. I had a less than perfect shot, he was facing me at around 45 degrees. I aimed for the near front shoulder, and hit about 2 inches back. Luckilly, the bullet (Hornady XTP) shredded the liver and he was down within about 50 yards.
We searched for about an hour before we found him as it was pitch dark by the time I got back to the area with my light. I was not sure it was even a hit, as all I found was a patch of hair... no blood! I began doubting myself, as there was so much smoke after the shot I did not see his reaction to the shot. It seemed like an eternity, and I contemplated giving up the search until the morning. Then I saw the rack in the distance, and I knew the search was over.
Im debating whether to get the head mounted. Does anyone know of a good taxidermist in the Quebec/eastern Ontario region?
Good luck in the coming weeks guys!
