Well after much reading & training I took my son for his first day out to shoot his Henry Minibolt 22LR. We did this in a random fashion at a local pasture with dirt piles & Gophers to shoot at. After showing me that he was capable to excercise safety, handling, Loading, unloading & some dry firing of the minibolt I requested him to load it again and told him to shoot at a random dirtpile that had some backstop about 25yds away, with much anticipation he slowly pulled the trigger & fired his first round hitting not too far off target, after about 30rnds we started to move further out in the field at various natural targets and he was doing quite well so I ranged out a 100yd dirt pile along the bottom of a slope so there was backstop for him & he was just about right on target, now this is with fibre optic open sights so he was doing quite well. Eventually it was time to leave and he did not want to part ways with his new toy just yet but it was time to head in for supper so we cleaned up and went on our way talking about the great time we had together:D!!! I only wish my father had taken me to enjoy this same sport when I was 8yrs old!!!!

You've started something that will give you both years of enjoyable experiences and great memories. I was lucky, my dad took me hunting, but not too much plinking which I would have also enjoyed. I've been a shooter since I was ten and it was because my dad took the time to involve me in in something he enjoyed. Kudos to you and your son is a lucky boy!!!

Great story retepnosflow! Ya did good.

Had a similar first shooting day with my son when he was about 9, just as my father did when I was about 5. I've since done the same with my niece and nephew. All children should experience this.

My kids got started shooting with a Cooey Ace and a little falling block savage single shot.
My little boy is 25 now and 6' 3". He's become my best huntig buddy. Last fall as we were walking to out deer stands together, he actually made a point to thank me for taking the time when he was a youngster to bring him along to the hunt camp (missed school days too) to introduce him into this hunting/shooting lifestyle and way. It's gratifying when a child says something like that and really means it.

Your kids will thank you one day too I bet. Good on you.
