Resulted in this kill about 9:30 this morning.

I must say, wasn't impressed with the gun's pattern, but it did the job! I shot it at 10 yds, it fell off a cliff, I shot it again at approx 30 yds, but it wasn't going anywhere. But it was dying slow so I cut its throat.

I actually thought it was a doe when I shot it, but it turns out it was a button buck. I shot it with the 12 gauge because I was inside 400m of some houses. I was carrying a load of gear, an unloaded .308, and the 12 gauge, so I was moving pretty slow. I think that's why I was able to sneak up on it. I just walked around a corner and it was sitting there with a doe, so still that I thought "Whoa! Someone left some plastic lawn deer out here." Then I quickly gathered my wits and shot it. That single shot is so loud that it scared the crap out of two hunters in a blind behind me, too, which was kinda humorous (I was shooting in a completely safe direction, and didn't even know they were there until after I shot).

I did have a quick moment of panic when I couldn't remember which pocket I had my spare shells in, between all my bags and coats and gear. :D

Anyway, I sure would have liked a bigger deer with a bigger rack, but I'm happy just to fill my tag. This area has a huge problem with deer infestation, and the number of antlerless deer tags was doubled this year - so if someone has a problem with me shooting a button buck, put that in your pipe and smoke it, baby. ;)

Congrats on getting your deer. Why would anyone care that you shot a button buck? As long as you have a license for it, who cares! I'm personally NOT a fan of buckshot. I've seen too may deer wounded by it. anything over 30 yards & it's not a sure kill IMHO.

Nice!

What does that mean?

WHOOOOOOPS! Fixed it! Good catch. Um, I was definately shooting in a very safe direction (downhill into an empty valley with nothing in the way but a deer). I just typed that right before I went to bed.

They were behind me when I shot. They didn't know I was there and I didn't know they were there. That little short barrel on the H&R makes a lotta noise, though . .. my ears were ringing the rest of the day.

Around here we call that a fawn, there is more meat on a Labrador retriever. Congrats on getting out to hunt though, and putting something in the freezer. I have no luck here in archery season, and only a few days left.
edit** almost forgot... if you had to shoot a fawn twice, and it still wasn't dead, stop using buckshot. You are far better off with a slug if your gun can handle them.

those are tasy little guys and ya they dont have a tonne of meat but what ever it does have is usally nice and tender

It would have been dead after the first shot, eventually. I just made a crappy shot cuz I was in a hurry. The second shot was just to make sure he didn't run away - I had to climb down a cliff to cut his throat and I wasn't sure at first if he could get away (he couldn't). I didn't fancy chasing a wounded deer around.

Anyway, he never too a step after the first shot. But I've said before, I'll say it again - I know slugs are far superior to buckshot. I just couldn't use them in the area I was in, legally. I could have used a muzzleloader, but I don't have one. Maybe next year.

And, thanks! I know there were bigger deer in there but I wanted to get back to duck hunting.
