jjbkozack- did u have any pic of the re-crimp using the lee reloader,

bluemike807, jjbkozack- did u guys use any cards to take up space in the hull under the crimp?
 
there is a lil space there but i tried tapping the shell so the slug would go forward a couple mm and it didnt go outside of my grouping so im not going to bother
i tried to use some cardboard and lexan under the slug and found that didnt do anything either, i did find a cardboard cutout by the target that had an imprint of the bottom of the slug in it
the sides of the slug are flat so i dont think it possible the slug could get sideways as it is a tight fit in the wad


as far as the lee load all crimp, its good as long as you dont put full pressure on the end crimp as theres not much support in the wad and it kinda mushes the lip a little, ill try to snap a few pics tomorrow

i purposley put full pressure on the shell thats on its side to show deformation (due to the wad not being full of shot?) it slightly bulges out but still cycles flawlessly in my mossberg 500

Here's how I load mine. I know it's safe from MY gun but might not be from yours, so doing this is at your risk, don't do it, and if you do, you're responsible for everything. I agree with OP's warning, however when I make my slugs now, cutting the crimp works fine as there's a lip to hold the slug. This doesn't create problems as it's the same thing as shooting a 2 3/4" shell in a 3.5" chamber - they're made to be able to shoot fine even when the forcing cone is a bit away from the crimp.

Now out of my mossberg, this has been completely safe. No high pressures, no residue, it feeds and shoots just like normal Winchester bulk shot. These are easy to make, and are great slug practice. Do not use against anything but targets.

what is the velocity of those universal loads, i couldnt find any data on them any were including on the box i have?
and
what would the velocity be like with the lighter weight slug in the same case?
 
as for velocity, ya nothing on the box
the winchester have alot more POP than the federal target loads and you dont have to lead the clay out near as much, they seem to be right around the recoil of 1400fps rounds i have shot

i was messing around with some handloads and found the best grouping to be with about 2/3 of the reccommended max powder measure that came with the slug mold, not enough power to rock me back any but still enough to keep it pretty flat from 25m to 50m

ive gotta get one of these saturdays off and ill drag my chrony empowered buddy out for some shooting, see what kinda velocities these are shooting off at
 
Just wondering...since it seems to be pure lead that you guys are using for making these, would those stick-on wheel weights be better for making these slugs? I ask because I have a few pounds of stick-on. Got them without realising that one cannot use them to make regular boolits as they're too soft. Sooo...thought that maybe they could be made for this application. In which case, I now have an excuse to buy a shotgun. :)
 
I remember I did pretty good with this stuff when I was at the trap range last.

I ended up getting one of those lee loadall-2 Reloader press's and a 7/8oz mold, they didnt have the 1oz in stock. I made up a few quick slugs to see what they looked like, but I will need to use about a 1/4" of OP cards to take up space in the wad column , luckily i also have a right punch to use at work to make a bunch. i havent made any final product yet.

jjbkozack- what kind of powder were you using and what is the dipper size u have. the one i have is 2.2cc

OEM- i dont see a problem with them weights , as long they are lead, some ww are zinc
 
Great! I already ordered all the stuff needed to make the slugs but the only thing missing is something to redo the crimp. I don't want to spend 60-80$ on a shotgun shell press. Can someone ca. Point me a cheap solution to crimp my shells?
 
an easier method would be to cut the hulls on those cheap shells at about the mid point of the wad. so, its just the wad holding your shell together as you have cut the hull. the shot stays inside the shell rather than blowing through the front resulting in a "newfie slug" :D

i personally have done this 50 times and was shown by some newfies that have been doing it for years.
 
Great idea! Simple, easy, and no scrounging around for lead. I like it.

Pressures are always less with slugs, if compared to an equal weight of shot. This is due to greatly reduced sidewall pressure of slugs.

For a cheap crimper, check out a "roll crimper". I have a thread on a homemade one somewhere here on CGN.

Wheelweights would work fine for a slug; hell I'm using copper and haven't had issues. The only catch is NO CHOKES! Soft lead will swage down in thin shotgun barrels; hardcast and copper won't.
 
FAQMAT- i spent about $85 to get the leeloadall 2 and a 7/8oz lee keydrive slug mold from WSS, i would have to say thats pretty cheap, after about a 50-100 converted rounds it has paid for itself and it only took a couple of hours to make them.
For me it helped to have a source of lead on hand, I have got about 300# from a roofer friend, the price for scrap lead is low so I got a whole crew collecting for me at the time.
 
That is exactly how I loaded slugs for years. Works Great! I have since graduated to just loading skeet loads from once fired hulls and placing a slug in the wad instead of shot. I find it much quicker to cast a 100 slugs and them load them like conventional skeet shells rather than opening up shells. Also, by reloading once fired hulls you can get a good roll on the crimp and it won’t open up. I shoot multigun so I keep slugs in the belt mounted 4 round California Comp Works shell holders during competition. If I use the “opened-up” shells they tend to be difficult to extract from the holders as the crimp opens and difficult to smoothly load into the magazine tube quickly.
 
LOL I just made one 100 round Box of the crappy tire 8 shot this way!!! BUT i am lazy and just trade the CLEAN lead shots for premade LEE slugs from my friend and use a load all 2 like you to recrimp it. or i buy them from fellow CGNers.

I just open with a screw like you and use a BIG size 17 Wrench and use it like a can opener to open the mouth, it works and the slug drops in :)

BUT you get all the credit for actually taking pics and posting!! :D:D Way 2 Go! Now where do i put the 2000 rounds of Walmart shells i just picked up.. :) ( you should should have seen the look on the check out... i think they thought i was a crazy chinese)
