Figured i would make one thread this winter for all my coyote hunts.


Made the first stand of the year this morning and it was an exciting one

Farmer has been texting me saying he's seeing quite a few coyotes last week or so. I'm guessing this extreme cold has them moving more in daylight.

Got to the farm this morning at 7am, could see tractor lights out in the field feeding bails for the cattle. Truck said -14 and was dead calm no wind at all.

Walked the fence line to the back and got set up 5minutes before legal light. Right at 7:20am I gave a few barks/howls. Instantly get an answer to the south which is downwind. Wait 5 minutes then howled again. Kept hearing turkeys flying out of the swamp to the north and landing in the field. Must have been 50 turkeys, I kept getting a glimpse of them out of corner of my eye so I kept looking at way ever so often.....look over there again and there's 4 coyotes running past them coming right in!

Turn 180 degrees and get set up, coyotes are still charging in. Now they are all in the wide open about 350 yards from the bush...when the lead one was 75 yards away I gave a woof and they all stop for a look. Got on the last one and touch one off, See him dump in a heap then the scatter starts. Woof again and lead one stops at about 100 yards, Shoot again and see him death spin. Now I had to turn again and was woofing as loud as I could and one more stops at about 450 yards away (less than 20 yards from the bush) got on him, Moved the trigger forward to the hair trigger, hold my breath and squeezed, BANG see it go down and was trying to bite at the wound. Couldn't find the 4th in the heat of the moment.

While walking towards them I see the 3rd get up and hobble to the bush, I was still 300 yards away and couldn't get on him again. Followed blood for about 75 yards into the thick swamp. Waded in water up to my knees but couldn't find him, He could walk on top of the ice but I would break threw. Gave up after an hour, I hope he's dead. Thinking back I think I hit low, I aimed over top of back but still wasn't high enough. Really bums me out wounding one and not finding it.

Rifle is Sako 85 .22 250. 50g Bullet. Vortex diamondbackHP 4-16x42 scope.

That is a good start to your season.
It sucks when you hit one and can't recover it, but unfortunately it happens as they can go a long way and hide easily.
450 yards on a coyote is a good shot.
 
You are the master.... well done. I’m in awe. I can barely get ONE to my caller and ‘critter mojo’.

Nicely done and good shooting. I don’t think I could have remained that calm. Tell me more about your load please. Reload or factory? What 50 gr bullet you using? How was the fur damage?

I’ve primarily been using my 204 and am very happy with it. But every now and then I look at my lonely 22-250 and think it needs to go for a walk.

Very interesting specimens compared to their western brethren.

The hair looks softer and the dog on the top looks like someone sprayed black spots on the animal. Is that normal colouring in your neck of the woods?

Do the dogs get much larger throughout Ontario? Do they look different from region to region? My reason for asking is Ontario is a pretty big place.

Went to the next farm south tonight to the next big bush where I heard them howling this morning.

Set up at 4:50pm about 250 yards from bush line
Theres a bit of swampy cattails on one end and I can see anything coming from the bush before it gets there on the ice.

Give a few barks and howl/yips. Waited few minutes and didn't get an answer. Just about to give another call with it in my mouth and see a coyote coming across the ice towards the cat tails. I swing over and I knew with wind direction he would never wind me so I waited. 5 minutes goes by and I didn't see him so I was worried he seen me but not 30 second later I see him sneaking in very slow looking around. Gun up and finally at 20 yards coming right at me I lip squeaked and he stopped, and it was all over. Sat til dark hoping more would show but no such luck.

Another small male, thats all males today, didn't hurt the population too bad...


@bluelynx id say they are all common colours for Ontario coyotes. They all have black tips on their tails and black on their back and running down front of the legs. Id say these are all young coyotes from this spring. We defintely dont get many pale ones like you guys out west.

Good shooting for the first stand of the year. I'm up to 24 so far this year but 7 are snared. I shoot the same rifle you are using but mine is a 204 with a 4.5 x 14 Conquest. Keep up the good shooting.
 
Almost got one with my truck on the way to work tonight, don’t know how I missed him. I actually checked for hair when I got to work.Lol

Dead calm morning with snow storm coming i had to give it a try. Walking across the hard snow crust was so loud I almost turned around and left. Figured everything in the block would of heard me. Ger set up at 7:20am, few lone howls then gave about 45 seconds of rabbit squeals. About 5 minutes later I see 4 crows divebombing the field, Enough dips in the field I couldn't see anything. Two minutes later I see a coyote chasing the crows comin in. Waited til 180 yards when she started downwind I decided to shoot. 35lb female. The field looks flat in the picture but these coyotes sure now how to sneak in using the low spots.
