My coyote hunting season 2020-2021

What's your typical call set look like. I feel the coyotes in southern ontario have all heard rabbit distress and run the other way....

Also not sure if it will help or not. When snow is super crunchy I carry my deer grunt with me ... walk like a deer. Odd number steps up to max 7 with a 2 second break. Grunt quietly every 20 steps or so. I have gotten real close doing that before.

well looks like I have to start packing my grunt call - good idea kinda makes sense

Another Saturday morning double!

Get to a local farm this morning at 7am. Just got past the barn where you can see out in the field and I caught a black blob moving across the field. Binos up and its a huge coyote trotting across the field going about 500 yards away. I thought he seen me so I snuck past all the equipment and waited til he hit the bush. (Before shooting light)

Walked the low land to the next fence line where it was about 400 yards from where I seen the coyote go in.

7:30am now I'm set up against a fence post and start with a few barks and challenge howl.

Instantly a coyote appears not far from where I seen it last. Its standing there looking around then the big coyote comes back out and now they are both working their way towards me along the bush line. I ranged a few weeds at 300 yards and knew if they got much closer than that there is a chance they could wind me.

Then stop at about 350 yards and both sit down. I'm debating whether to shoot now or what but I'm still shaking from the walk in and excitement so I just wait. They start to walk in again sniffing everything on the way in. Finally at that 300 yard mark they both had their heads down in the same track sniffing. Aimed for the bigger ones head and shot.

Watched him drop in a heap and the female jumps straight up and trots 20 yards and stops and looks back at her partner....bad move. Got on her and shot again and seen her tumble.

Massive well fed coyotes. Both perfect pelts. The male weighted 52lbs and the female 37lbs. Skinning them both as we speak.

Ranged it after at 290 and 275 yards.

I carry a few of the heavy industrial garbage bags in my foxpro duffelbag. I throw the coyote in the bag and the loop the rope over the bag when dragging. It makes them slide way better over the snow and no plowing. The garbage bags are extremely helpful protecting the hide when dragging across a canola field. If its a long walk, you may have to flip the bag over if it wears through. Also helps keep the truckbox clean

Really good idea. Nice and light too. Snows getting deep here now and only going to get worse. It was 600 yard drag back to the truck today lol

Thx everyone for the kind words

Got an wise old bugger this morning.

Set up on the side knoll against some weeds and snow drift and had the caller about 60 yards to my left on upwind side. Howling, barking on hand calls then one male challenge on the caller and sat and waited 5 minutes. Then started the jack distress and as I'm scanning the tree line in front of me I catch movement to my right on downwind side.

Here's a coyote at top speed about 100 yards downwind staring to angle towards the decoy. My gun is facing wrong way as this coyote came across a wide open 700 yard field without me seeing him. I found out later he came from across the road too!.

Hes winging around and winds me about 75 yards away. Doesn't even slow down just angles back straight towards the bush. Hes got about 200 yards to go before hes gone. I got gun shouldered now, ease the cross hairs tip of his nose and squeeze. Watched him barrel roll into the snow. He tried to get up so i shot again as he spun and hit him far back but he died from the 1st shot anyways Pup distress going on the foxpro now and I shut it off after a minute. I'm looking around for anymore and I see another coyote about 500 yards away (where I thought they would come from) hes sitting down looking at me. I'm pretty sure he watched it unfold. I did a bit more pupdistress and after 5 minutes of him looking around I decided to shoot before he left. Swing and a miss. Must have been close, I could see him kicking up snow all the way to the bush he didn't even slow down lol.

Did this old dog a favor. Nice size male. 3 canine teeth rounded off and the only good one was broke off at the gum line. Hes been gnawing on some frozen stuff in this -20 the last 2 weeks.

Rubbed very bad. Used Mad max78 idea with garbage bag. Worked MINT in the deep fluffy snow for the 400 yard drag back to the truck.
