Hey what a beauty. I have had work done by jason years ago when I lived in ottawa.....is he still in that little strip mall in Nepean? Beautiful wood. Email me before you post it in the exhange forum...LOL

Yeah, he's still in the same shop. It's more of an industrial park type setup than a strip mall, but yes.

As for the exchange forum - I;d not hold my breath waiting for that to happen... lol.

Okay, I'm a curious bugger. I know you said it cost 'a lot'. APPROXIMATELY how much is 'a lot' to a fine feller like yourself? :)

Are we talking $1000 'a lot' (not even close, I'm sure) or $25,000 'a lot'?

Just curious what I'd need to save up if I ever went the custom route down the road!

Nice Safari rifle!

Now that's what you need...zebra hide rifle sling.(but I'm not selling;) )

Hmm... well, I'll try to break it down from memory... hard to do as I paid for the work in chunks.

The stock blank was $300
The donor rifle was about $700 (used)
The bottom metal was $200 after importation, etc.
The swivels were $40 each.
The sights were another $120 or so.
The scope was about $700
The mounts and bases were around $200
The engraving was around $1050
Turning the blank into a stock was $700
The barrel was $550 installed
The assorted metal gunsmithing, blueing, etc. was around $400 if I remember.
The recoil pad fitted was $80

So I guess around 5K or so in the end...

But it didn't seem that bad at the time, because it was paid out in much smaller chunks over the course of a year.

That is a great looking rifle and your choice of caliber is awesome. I like the scope. As you said it is a "safari type" rifle so (in modern terms) I always think that every modern safari rifle needs a 1.5X5 Vari X III, it is the only natural choice. Great rifle.

I want something like that. I wonder if I could get an old milsurp done up like that. Of course, I wouldn't butcher a collectors item, just a mis matched parts gun.

So, am I to be called Bubba now?

If you got Jason Spencer to build you a "pull all stops" custom Mauser 98, it would be anything but Bubba's work. Trust me - I've seen his Mausers before.

As you say, start with an already bubba'd gun or a non-collectible mis-match and go from there. Don't trash a nice 'surp though!!

The gun he's working on now for my is on an all-matching stripped 1909 Argentine receiver. When I got it, the barrel was chopped, the bore pitted, the wood missing. Perfect candidate! And it'll lool like all getout when it's done :)

For those interested, here's the next gun's specs so far:

-1909 Argy receiver
-David Gentry Win70-style swing safety
-Oberndorf-style modded 1909 bottom metal
-EAW mounts and rings
-Bold trigger
-Dakota Arms 2-screw monogrammed grip cap
-Classis English style stock with the cheekpiece removed (Dad's preference)
-26" 1:12 .35 Whelen bbl
-Banded swivel

Still undecided on:
-Front sight?
-Quarter rib or Sako rear sight?
-Glass?

I'd say we're on the same wavelength! :)

Uhh... I think this rifle might be famous now! So far, that I know of, at LEAST four CGN'ers have pm'd me that they dropped into Gunco this week after seeing this thread to see the rifle in person while it's still there... lol.

Hopefully y'all liked it... ;)

A customer brought a .375 Mauser to me to have a different S&B scope mounted. It was a full custom set up by a 'smith in the US in the modern American classic style. You've seen photos of this sort of rifle in Gun Digest, etc. It had ALL the features that you would expect, and was extremely well done. He ordered it while at the Safari Club show. US$9000. Rifle has been to Africa, etc. Built on a military action, although the thumb cut was the only indication of military origin. Claven 2's rifle is competitive with this one for quality, and is a bargain in comparison.
