my DA Socom 18 (M14 shorty) review + problems + lots of Pictures

Can/am is very good in regards to refunds ..prepaid stickers for returns with warranty issues.
If they cant fix it they replace it. Contact them first though.

I seriously think these should be looked over by buyers for all the known common issues. If its JUST a loose oprod guide, that is very easy to fix. If thats all that's wrong, keep it, fix it, shoot it.

Just put some grease on it....that safety bridge keeps the firing pin from setting off the rounds in the chamber (slam fire) so you don't want a file near that....

None of my Norinco's bolts are that low in relation to that area. It makes sense to have a bit of impact to jar the firing pin but mine seem to bounce through that area with some contact rear of the face of the bolt and the contour of the bridge matches the contour of the bolt.

I'd be tempted to file that one a bit and then grease it but maybe others can confirm if that picture represents mil spec? Seems a bit crude if it does and also makes me question why mine don't?

OK quick search online regarding "safety bridge"
It seems the slot in the bridge is the important part as that blocks the firing pin until it's fully rotated into lockup.
The Friction from the bolt smashing through that area due to poor quality control is not the design intention of the safety bridge. It is important to load these guns from the magazine as the friction there is considered necessary to slow the bolt somewhat but looking at the picture of the bolt well below the bridge looks like something that needs a bit of file work.

On both my M305's, the bolt does not sit so low as on your's. They barely touch the safety bridge.

Send it back, dude.

Am I wrong to believe these DA Socom18's were supposed to be superior in fit and finish vs the Norc m305?

No but it depends on what you consider superior, they are still made in the same place by the same people. So "superior" is pretty subjective.

Other than poor mag release, which binds on one side and the op-rod piston interface mine is fine, not sure about headspace but the cases look fine. I need to have it verified to be sure.

Not if you believed the statement made by Canada Ammo on this forum. Something along the lines of "best ever" was what I read?

I'd say you need to go into any Chinese gun with an open mind and willingness to do some work if needed.

If it's a complete turd send it back.

If it doesn't work right out of the box...send it back. If your new car didn't start...would you go out and fix it without any skill's to do it??? No you would not. Fixing a gun is the same..if
you don't fix it to spec...you could be wearing the bolt or op rod or worst. It isn't up to the buyer to fix new gun's that don't work. If that is what buyer's think, then the quality is going
to get worst, not better. It shouldn't matter where the firearm is built, the buyer should know that it is built to government spec for export and is safe to use out of the box.
If it isn't, the Government of Canada will be in a position to dis-allow importation because it isn't a safe product. The importer's are taking responsibility for their product, but the manufacturer
isn't delivering a safe product. The Canadian consumer market for firearm's can't be considered a dumping ground for poor quality control by foreign gun maker's!!

Some guys will not know what to look for unless they read these threads or have good knowledge of the item and what to look for.
And I was looking to get one, but switching my mind to grab regular Norq

I got my replacement a couple days ago. It is satisfactory, at least my FH will go on all the way now and the trigger is nice like on my 2011. The op rod lines up with the piston a bit better but the guide is still loose and the gas ring gets tight at like 5:30 o clock so i think if it was any looser it might need shim, the gas plug and flash hider tighten it up pretty good. The finger tab on the op rod is sharp like a knife but overall its ok. Front sight is still over to the right but not quite as much maybe half a mm less.

can am was no hassle exchange, even gave me a prepaid shipping label

Thanks, I also found a good example

interesting way to peen it. Id look at replacing the roll pin as well, every one I've heard or seen on the Chinese made guns seem to be broken out of the box. It's a 4mm roll pin if memory serves, but feel free to correct me anyone. After peening it just red loctite it like Chalkriver said. It's such a simple fix I don't really understand why people freak out about it so much.

i got mine 2 days ago and it is pretty good so far. It had the loose guide that i fixed pretty quickly and it's aligned and not moving now.
Another issue: I saw some guy mention a tilt test for the action and gas piston and the rod was rubbing a bit on the barrel when it was in the pulled back position, fixed that with a little polishing and it's perfect now.

visually there seems to be no index problem.

The safety is not functonning very well when in the stock but functions perfectly outside...probably some more sanding is required somwhere...will figure it out eventually.

The stock is pretty crappy, i am not a fan of plastic on my firearms anyways...the fix for this is on it's way...

I guess i got a good one.

The ultimate test will be on the range...

I got some 150 gr federal powershok but apparently the soft primers on these rounds are risky in a semi auto with a free floating pin...so i'm not planning to confirm this the hard way...anybody ever uses these with this rifle?
