My dad asked me about high cap bolt guns

Many if not most centre fire rifles can be adapted to AICS mags with a bottom metal kit or a stock pre fit for AICS mags (like the mdt lss stock, for example) restocking can also help with bedding etc, but it can be expensive depending how you go about it, and whether gunsmiths get involved.

An outfit in the states called dark eagle makes larger capacity mags for savage mag fed guns, I think northern republic magazines imports them. As they are pretty well hand made, these mags are expensive. Not sure if they do 223, but I know they do .308.

Dad asked me about hi capacity magazines on boot guns, what guns would have them?

I believe what the OP wants to ask is:

"Are there any bolt action rifles that have a removable magazine that has a capacity greater than 5 rounds, specifically in the .223 /5.56 caliber?"

high capacity magazines?

Not trying to be rude, but what is your definition of high capacity magazine? I believe any Anti-gun person it would be any "clip exceeding 5 rounds". My "high capacity" definition is any magazine for a non-automatic centerfire with a third-party made aftermarket magazine designed to more than triple the normal capacity (example: civilian AR15's were designed to have a 30 round magazine, so if you put a 90 round or greater magazine/belt than that is 'high capacity' to me).

Again, I am not trying to be rude and I know it sounds that way, but can we please (I'll beg) stop using the 'high capacity' Anti definitions. :bigHug:

Not rimfire, I mean centrefire rifles in general, in 223 preferably. I. Saw a savage with a 26 inch barrel, can't remember what model, are they at least detachable magazines? He has great big bear paws he can't do top loading

I said Mossberg MVP is a 223 bolt action that uses AR15 mags. And also said many popular manufactures of guns there aftermarket accessories to make them use detachable mags either 5 or 10rd.

And neither did you Clarkiepew.

Well, because you weren't asking about them. You wanted to know about 25 round 10/22 mags in the Ruger American. Which are legal, of course.

So to round it up, the BX 25 mag is illegal to use in any rifle, unless it is pinned to 10 rounds then?

One more time-

If the magazine is classified as a PISTOL magazine, it must be pinned to 10 rounds.

It's the magazine that is the issue, not where you stick it.

I'm pretty sure the bx-25 mags have to be pinned to 10, period. Handgun mags are handgun mags, ja?

That is correct. However the BX25X2 mags are somewhat of a grey area but are allowed to contain 25 rounds in each side. To my knowledge the RCMP has neither endorsed nor condemned these magazines, whereas the regular BX25 are specifically limited.

Dad asked me about hi capacity magazines on boot guns, what guns would have them. I don't know, any bolt guns take Ar mags? What would have a 10 or 20+round capacity? He's been taking about a savage accu trigger in 223, any of those have high capacity magazines?

Well, by far the most popular ones are AICS (Accuracy International Chassis System) magazines that come in 3, 5, and 10 capacities that I know of.

When I had a Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle, I bought several of Ruger's version of the AICS magazines. They were intended as 10 shkt mags, but some iron thumbed folks were getting 12 or 13 .308Win in there.

Many rifles have Bottom Metal kits capable of accepting AICS mags, these kits are generally available for Remington 700, Savage, Tikka, and a few others.

Then you have chassis options which replace the stock and the bottom metal. I have a MDT LSS chassis for my Rem700 and it accepts AICS magazines.

There are several manually operated guns that accept AR type magazines, such as the Mossberg MVP that has been mentioned or the Mossberg Patrol which uses .308 AR mags. However, as they are using AR magazines those magazines must be limited to 5 of whatever caliber they are designed for, as they are intended for use in a semiauto centerfire rifle. You do have the option of using AR type pistol mags, such as the LAR-15 or AT-15 but that seems kind of strange. Probably easier to go with AICS mags, unless you already have a bunch or AR type pistol mags.

I just got a ruger scout for 950 out the door. Nice handling gun and quite accurate, takes 10,5 and 3 round mags. Decent iron sights and the option to mount the scope out front or traditionally. I know the mossberg MVP takes ar mags but I've never handled one personally.

Mossberg MVP is a 223 bolt that uses AR15 mags. Most popular bolt guns ( rem, savage ) theres options -aftermarket for mag kits.

Mossberg MVP + .50 Beo mags. ?

Anything that would take 10+ rounds without alterations? I know some lever action pistol cartridges take more but he was looking for a .223

I hope that helps. Currently .50 beowulf magazines are the only common magazines that fit more than ten rifle cartridges in them. They accept anywhere between 14 and 20 rounds of .223.

Northern republic magazine (a site sponsor) sells aftermarket magazines for savages, have a look at their site, also howa (legacy sports) sells bolt rifles with large capacity magazines, can be found through prophet river (another site sponsor).

Any other bolt action rifle that takes AR magazines should accept the 10 round LAR magazines.

And now back to some drivel about 10/22's...

I'd like a 28 inch cz452 lux style barrel on my 10/22
