My Dad's Mauser Model 98: Brought Home From Vietnam

He was asking how it compared to the 30-30.

From my notes:

Hirtenberger 147 grain 7.62x51 2770 fps from a M305

Igman 150 grain 8x57 2730 fps from a M904/39

So that European Load is not quite up to the 7.62x51

I like the 8x57 and load for it. It has taken everything I've pointed it at from coyotes to elk with no problems. My present load is a 200 grain partition at 2500 fps.

My post was mostly sarcastic as i don't believe the 3030 and 8mm are in the same class. One is a full power cartridge, while the other would be considered an intermediate one by today's standards. Perhaps i am wrong and you can get more speed out of it, but i dont have my manual around me right now.

Lots of German Equipment used against US forces in Vietnam. From K98s, MG34s, etc... the Viet Minh and Viet Cong used French, US, German, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, etc Arms all over the place.

The French used MP40s for sure. They even used Wehrmacht and SS camouflage for uniforms, hats and helmet covers.

Here, the soldier on the right has 1931 Splinter-tarn pants. This picture was taken during the siege of Dien bien Phu.

This is a photo from 1953 Laos. A Waffen SS Oak Leaf pattern Zeltbahn has been turned into a nice jacket for this Frenchman.

Nice article and thanks for sharing but comparing a 30-30 to a 8*57 is probably a bit off !

When I was a Kid perhaps 10 or 11 we had no Toys but there was an endless and free supply of all kinds of Wehrmacht Guns and Ammo people wanted to get rid off.

So one day me laying crosswise over my Buddy for weight, fired a round 8*57 out of a Gewehr 98 (as you know this is the longer version as the Karabiner) this Bullet went completely trough a approximately 24" life and healthy Peer Tree trunk. The Shell was a standard Military Full metal Jacket with a Steel core.

Compare this to a 30-30 bullet which may be adequate to take down a Deer, perhaps a Moose in a pinch but that's about it.

Cheers
