Well I got a surprise in the mail yesterday and here's what it was. I took a model 19 and had the following work done by Murray Charlton:

Shorten barrel - 108mm
Supply and fit highviz front sight
Round butt frame, stipple back strap and fit Hogue grips
Smooth trigger, insert trigger stop and action job
Bevel front and back of cylinder, chamfer charge holes
Install crane ball lock
Install new rear sight insert (all black), widen notch to .155"
Matte blue finish


I have to say this totally exceeded all expectation I had (and I had high expectations). Some things I noticed before the range:

-Lockup is tight (guessing the ball detent lock helps)
-The cylinder to forcing cone gap is tight.
-I love the matte finish, and it looks like it'll stand up to nicks and dings way better than a shiny polished blue
-I was a little worried the grips looked big before they were fit. Once fit I think they look great and they fit my hand perfectly
-I love the way Murray beveled the front and back of the cylinder. The front is a little more aggressive and on the back he just took the edge off


I had it to the range today, some impressions:

-it is very accurate, it shot one hole groups at 15m
-it's smooth and easy to shoot in double action
-the short barrel is quick out of the holster and the gun handles great
-recoil with 38's is minimal and the gun is real easy to control for fast follow up shots

I was using a mernickle iwb holster as well as a blackhills owb holster and picked up a couple jetloaders for faster reloads.

Thanks, I put a lot of thought into this one. I wanted to make sure when I sent it to Murray I didn't end up changing my mind a million times about every detail so I put a lot of thought into it before I sent it in and I'm happy to say that after getting it back there's still nothing I would have done differently. As for Murray's work if you don't think we have top quality smith's in Canada, give your head a shake and contact Murray, he will not let you down.

They're just Hogue grips. I was thinking of going with spegel grips but had a hard time finding any and when I talked to Murray he thought it was better to go with the Hogue's with the screw on the bottom of the frame instead of going through the frame. Less chance of any interference with the spring. As it turns out I'm pretty happy with the way they feel and look.

No I haven't shaved down the jetloaders, does this help? If so is there any links on how and where to do it?
 
Thanks Stevo, don't think I have the balls to bring this out 3-gunning but maybe with a lot more practice. My reload times with the jetloaders today were in the mid 5's and I have a feeling it's gonna take a lot of practice to get much lower than that.

Very Nice! Love the finish and grips. He did a fine job.
Question: does the square shoulder of the front sight get hung up when un-holstering?

My intial plan was to have it cut for moonclips but Murray talked me out of it. I think with enough practice with the jetloaders I should be able to get relatively close to my loading times with moonclips (I'm no speedster). I have a 625 as well and an 8 shot 627 so I'm interested in checking my reloading times with both of those to compare to this. Yesterday I was in the mid 5 seconds for reloads with the jetloader (keep in mind that was the first time I've ever used them), I'm just guessing with the 625 i'm probably 3.5 and with the 627 I'm probably around 4.5seconds but I will have to get the timer out the next time I take those to the range to see for sure.

Does anyone know what a reasonable reload time should be with the jetloader for an average ipsc or idpa competitor?
 
Very, very nice!

I had MD Charlton do a "distinguished tune" on my Model 57 6" a few years back. Very pleased.

If I was going to get a custom wheelgun these days it would be a S&W N frame with 5" barrel in .45ACP.

Thanks, that 57 has got to be a keeper. Here's my 625. This one was done by Ken Soucie and it's chopped to 106mm. I love the gun but I like blued revolvers better and would have a preferred a 25-2.

Great looking gun!!!

The only thing I would add is getting the cylinder cut from moon clips...but by someone that does it so you can still load it without them if you so wish.
