My experience with Kodiak Defence

I just want to say that I had an awesome experience with Kodiak today. Yesterday I went about cleaning the gas block on my wk180, but upon disassembly I noticed that the piston cup was broken, the block was a bit too dirty as I had to force the piston rod pretty hard. Called Kodiak Defence about a replacement under warranty and they sent me a new piston cup with no questions asked. They picked up as soon as I called and the guy I spoke with was very polite and professional. Definitely a great experience and love to see Canadian manufacturers giving customers this level of support.

i had the same experience with my gen1. had bolt and carrier issues, emailed and parts where in the mail quickly! great experiences with kodiak customer service!
 
Any idea if Kodiak will preemptively ship these parts before they fail?

my 180-G1 is currently not getting a lot of love. Its just sitting in the safe.

Id be happy to pay a small fee (shipping and handling)

in my case with the gen 1 it was after 100 rounds or so. can’t remember exactly but, they treated the bolt carrier with something that made them brittle. long since been corrected. mine was from the second run, very early build… but like i said kodiak was stellar.

I talked with Owen about this last year. He basically said that they have sold 11,000 WKs and only a small portion have reported issues. I wanted to see if I could get a new HT threaded charging handle instead of my Gen 1.5 one which constantly comes loose and there's no way to tighten it except those two holes and invariably every time I tighten it with a allen key or whatever, it always comes loose. I am just waiting till the day it shears off...yes, I am that cheap. I wish he would have sent me one. He did say if and mine broke, he would be happy to replace it (and no, I am not lying and saying mine broke just to get a new one).

Now, earlier this year I took off my handguard to tighten the gas block screws (to try to avoid the piston rod breakage issues) and when I put the handguard on I way overtightened it (6 of the 8 screws were loose) and stripped the screws. I got them out using a hex punch to make a new shape in them but ruined them. A call to Kodiak and Owen put new screws in the mail for me within 24 hours.

JMCC, just like you I think I would be willing to pay a bit of shipping to get upgraded parts. But it sounds like Kodiak will only replace it when it breaks, not before.
 
I’ve had to use their warranty service twice so far on an early model wk180
The first time when the piston rod broke it was good they sent parts out ASAP
Second time when I had bolt and barrel issues and I had to send the gun in to them it was a gong show
They even lost my rifle lol

Id gladly pay actual shipping plus a bit to cover material costs.
Id love it if they said "for $50, here is bag of all the most common parts that break. Plus actual shipping to your door"

Taxes in, under $100 but keep the gun running for a long time!

This would be in KD's best interest to have something like this. Now, I know some people will say why are we pre-emptively paying for something which should not break in the first place? As with anything else if it is within warranty it's covered but outside warranty, we'd have to pay anyway. And presumably for most parts, there is an improved version (unlike my car's electric water pump which is known to fall and yet the manufacturer has not improved on it at all and any replace pump you buy the clock starts ticking on the next failure). In KD's case, I would be interested in an improved parts kit - and for KD they would retain more customer loyalty that way rather than customers buy third party parts. I certainly would feel a lot better knowing the somewhat more common breaking parts I have the replacements in hand on a kit. I am going to suggest this to Owen and see if that's something they may consider offering to their customers.

On the flip side, however, I am thinking they may not do this, because by offering this, it is essentially conceding that they have parts that are more prone to failure, and that will open another kettle of fish with regards to warranty/liability issues. But I would think any good company would stand behind its products, whether good or bad and if bad, then they should take clear steps to improve on a part. Which can only benefit the company.
 
Hey guys I’m considering purchasing a kodiak defence gen 2 but I see. I was looking at another rifle by crusader arms sentinel. I was wondering if anyone knows much about both of them and what would the better purchase be for my first 5.56 caliber rifle.
