My experiences with .22LR recently, function, supply and inconsistent record keeping

My local CT has never had .22LR in years. My local Walmart had the 333 which my 10/22 ran pretty well, and the XV only. Next closest was Target which doesn't have any at all, and then Le Baron, which I just described. I'd give the M22 a try if my local CT had it.

JEZUZ 29 cents a box what a dream...

Yeah it was cheap.

Beer and pop bottles were worth 2 cents each for deposit. It took 16 bottles picked up from the ditch to get a box of ammo (had to pay sales tax). You had to have the beer bottles turned in at the bottle depot before noon on Saturdays, so it made some early mornings to pick bottles to return so we could shoot Sat. afternoon or Sunday. People didn't throw away as many bottles back then as they do now.

If they sold that ammo today it wouldn't "cheap-assed waxed Russian crap". Stores would market it as "Tactical Stealth Ordnance" and add 500% markup to the price. Of course with a name like that the RCMP would be moving to have it prohibited as they would claim it would penetrate tungsten carbide body armour.

I like the M22 as well, and that's usually my first choice when its around. Unfortunately the best place to buy it here is in Toronto and I'll only pick some up if I happen to be there for other stuff as well.

I like to buy some of the 100-round plastic packs and reuse them for bulk. Mostly Win 333 here as well. With the plastic packs it's easy to slide the cover partially open, dump out exactly 10 rounds and load up my magazines.

The thing with the neatly-packed boxes, is you always get exactly the stated number of rounds. With the Win bulk all dumped in the box, I have counted them out into my plastic packs, and I always end up with 3-7 extra rounds on top of what's stated on the box, and I get at most 3 duds per 500. I think that's a fair exchange.

Got a chance to run more Xpert HV through my 10/22 today. This box was much more reliable than the first box that's for sure. But I still got about 5 duds, hit twice, and still didn't go off. And about 5 fail to feed, and stovepipes combined. So about 10 failures in 500 rounds. So noticeably less failures than the first box, which I had 3-4 times more failures.

Also tried out some Winchester Wildcat, and Remington Gold (not 100% sure but I think it's the same one that comes in the "Bucket 'O' Bullets" format). I was hoping the Remington Gold would work well in my 10/22 since you can get it in the large bucket format, but alas, I am not that lucky. First the Wildcat. LOVE IT!!! Where can I get more? Went through a few hundred, and only 1 fail to feed. All I had to do was re-rack the slide once and that's it. By far the most reliable .22LR I've run through my 10/22 so far. Perhaps the round nose, NOT hollowpoint helps with feed issues? Also, I could swear, the wildcats are the hottest .22LR I've run so far. Had a nice beefy report compared the HV which apparently stands for HV, and slightly more recoil.

The Remington Gold in the 525 box format was even less reliable in my 10/22 than the bad box of Xpert HV. First of all, I found 1 empty case in the box, that's never a good sign. Multiple (10+) rounds were slightly loose in the case, which made them feed poorly (seemed like the nose caught the feed ramp, and came loose at the crimp as the bolt tried to strip it from the mag). And I found 2 rounds with noticeable dents in the cases to the point I did not feel comfortable using them. It was also the least accurate ammo between the Winchester 222/333/555, Xpert HV and Wildcat. I'm guessing the loose crimps might have had something to do with it? And this was in the 525 box format. Is it even worse in the bucket format? Almost bought one of those buckets. Guess it's a good thing I didn't. Have more of the Remington Gold. Let's hope it was just a bad batch like perhaps the HV today where the second box was noticeably better than the first.

Which leads me to, where can I get more Wildcat?!? :D

My 10/22 loves the wild cats, the M22 and CCI stingers as well as the winchester that comes in the same plastic box format. Buckets didn't impress my with semi but were just fine in bolt and lever. Semi is fun, but I think I love the lever, so send your buckets over lol :D

just get a marlin 795, i call mine mikey cause it likes everything!!!! 1 stovepipe in 525 rds again yesterday..... rem golden bullets this time, with pro mag 25 rd mags and the stock 10rd mag, my fave tack driver.......

I've shot a friends 795, and he has issues with various .22LR ammo as well. He can't run the 222/333/555 while my 10/22 loves it (he gets mostly fail to feed issues, but quite a few stovepipes as well. And I asked him about how his 795 likes Remington Gold, and says his runs it pretty well, but still gets fail to feed issues, about 3-5% of rounds loaded. Otherwise, says it runs fine other than being on the dirty side. He also cleans his 795 in a similar regimen as I which is after every range visit, which ends up being ~500 rounds.

I have a box of Xpert HV. It sucks. 1 in 10 were duds. When I bought my Little Badger, the previous owner gave me the box saying it was terrible, so I knew what I was getting.
I had much better luck with Dynapoint GT.
I also have a bunch of 333, 555, and 525 I haven't tried yet. Hopefully will have better results than the Xpert HV.

This was the Wildcat, at 75 yards with an NCStar scope, and stainless/synthetic 10/22.

10 rounds top left, 10 in the bullseye, 5 in the other corners. I started in the top left corner and worked my way around the outside and finished off on the bullseye. Shots were taken at ~2 second intervals at each target (basically with every measured breath), with a slight pause between targets. When going for the bullseye, shots seemed to be hitting high and to the left so I started compensating and started shooting low and right.

What I'm learning is that 2 people can have the same model of rifle and the same ammo, and one will have no issues and the other can have many. Seems that a .22 can be good with one kind of ammo for one person and not so good with the same for another.

It boils down to spending a little range time (shame that!) with your gun and various ammo brands and figuring out what works for your copy of that model of gun. My 10/22 eats golden bullets all day long, and someone elses 10/22 will FTE all day long. I have no idea where the differences are and how that's possible.

absolutely true... funny 2 guns same model, and some just run better with some stuff than others, its a shame we have to buy all this ammo and spend all this time shooting!!!! lol, a have a few semi auto 22's and they all run pretty well, of course some like some ammo better than others, but i think the big thing is to keep the rifle clean, i always pull the action from the stock spray it thouroughly with rem action cleaner, watch the gunk drip out until its clear, then spray a tiny, tiny bit of lubricant and work the action so it gets where it should get. this seems to work for me and keep them running pretty well. after all it cycles extremely fast and just some gunk can easily cause ftf and stovepipes. i was with a buddy last summer he just got a sr22, he was proud as hell, {and should be with his scope and extra mags it set him back a grand for a 22} anyway it wouldnt feed anything including cci mini mags, which i think runs great in everything i have tried, i asked him if he cleaned it after he bought it, he said "clean it, its brand new for f sakes" i just laughed we took it somewhat apart sprayed it down, a little shot of lube when we were done and it was a totally different gun.

I needed some synthetic 15w-40, and CanTire had some on sale ending tonight. Figured I'd check their flyer online to see if there was anything else going for a good price while I was going anyways. Noticed, WTF?! They have Winchester Wildcat? Huh? They have it at multiple stores? So I go, find the 15w-30 Mobil 1. Go to look for the .22LR and as it has been for at least a year, there was not a single round of .22LR. Asked a staff member what's up with that? Has no idea, but confirmed, they haven't had ANY .22LR in a while and they are on order, but no idea when any will show up.

Oh, and someone bought the last box or two of Xpert HV from my local Walmart recently. As I mentioned, in all fairness the 2nd box was noticeably more reliable, but still not anything like the Wildcats, at least in my setup.

More experiences with Winchester Xpert HV

Shot another 500 rounds of Xpert HV recently. The first 350 or so went without a hitch. Maybe had 1-2 rounds that were slightly out of spec dimension-wise, at the rim of the casing. Made the rounds bind at the top of the HC3R mag as it transitions from the top rail, to the stripper clip rail. It was going great. Even ripped through 2 back-to-back mags of of it through my 2 HC3R mags about as quick as I could cycle it trying to induce a jam, and nothing. 50 rounds through the 2 HC3Rs and not 1 failure. Then I got to the last 100-150 rounds in the box, and it was jam city again. Many rounds were slightly out of spec near the rim, causing them to bind slightly, which also caused fail to load issues where the round jammed up and bent where the case meets the bullet. Then there was the usual 3-4 duds that got struck and did not fire. And shooting it back to back with the Wildcat, noticebaly less accurate at 50+ yards. Glad it was my last box of Xpert HV.

Now to dig into this big ol pile of CCI and Federal!
