I am needing to change out the iron sights on two of my firearms. The savage 340c is functional, with an open v notch rear but my eyes are not getting any younger. I was thinking about putting a peep aperture sight on the rifle. I could also go inexpensive sight, as this is a bush gun in 30-30. What would you recommend for either. (I understand there is a weaver mount for the rifle.) would I get better optics with a peep sight rather than the v notch?

I find the peep easier than the v-notch, you just center the blur, rather than having to guess how far under the blur the top of the V is.

Schmidt rubin 1889, I had to look that up, a different looking device for sure!

I grew up shooting open sights, but my eyes have gone too far south lately to use them well now. I can, however, still use peep sights very effectively. You should try them.

Don't try to consciously center the front sight in the aperture...just look through the aperture, put the front on target, and squeeze. That's the way they are intended to work, and it is the fastest and best method.

Might look into some fiber optics as well! They jump right out at ya, and if you can't see those, there's no helpin ya. With different colour front and rear sights they are really easy to pick up and put on target for me. I am far from old but I can't stand the v notch and buckhorn sights on most levers.

Just wait till you do get old.......tell us how much you really don't like them....:D

We have shot together. So are you blsming your eyesight for those groups you were shooting with that SKS? Lol

Hopefully by the time I reach your age they will have some magic pill or lazer surgery to make your eyes work right.

If they can do it for hard ons surely they can make my eyes work someday!

I put a fixed 4 power scope on my 340C. It works fine and if it is really close I can still use the iron sights.

I think a peep would be harder to use than a v notch. I think the suggestion of using fiber optics might be more helpful.

Thanks for the input! I will decide on the scope with the weaver side mount, or the fibre optics. You were meaning the Williams brand of fibre optics?

A Williams peep and fiber optic front is a help if your eyesight
is not what it used to be and you want to squeeze a few more
years out of the irons.

It is a fact of life. It is called old f**ker itis, and I am one of them. I suggest go and see your eye doctor. There are solutions out there but nothing is perfect.

Exactly!
I knew from periodic eye examinations that I was developing cataracts, but they really sneak up on you, especially at the range. My shooting eye was by far the worst.
So, last spring cataract operation, 15 minutes sitting in the clinic and presto, my shooting eye is now 20-20!
What a difference now at the range.
