My factory VARMINT/HEAVY BARREL rifle shoots sub .75" all day! Really? Prove it!

So I have been trying for the 0.5 MOA challenge and have been getting close but no joy so far due to some ammo issues. My last shoot was bad but good enough...barely... for the 0.75 MOA challenge. This is from Saturday Apr. 12th/14 on the 100 yard range.

The rifle is a Savage Model 12 VLP in 223, shooting 75 grain Amax over 24 grains of Varget.

Groups are 0.742", 0.718", 0.709", 0.703" and 0.646" (.709 MOA, .686 MOA, .677 MOA, .672 MOA and .617 MOA). The average is 0.703" (squeeked in - not proud but it will do).

Good shooting Paul, we need to set up the wind flags! No evidence of the wind being an issue on your groups but one of these days we will be kicking ourselves for blowing a good group or 2.

Just read this entire thread, sounds like fun. I have a Windham Weaponry Varmint Exterminator. ( AR 15 ) it is a factory rifle in .223 with a 20" fluted bull barrel. I didn't see it mentioned anywhere that this rifle is not allowed, but just want to make sure I can try the challenge with it. Thanks, Tom.

I also have a VEX. I'll have to give it a try too.

I've been reading this tread(amongst others) waiting and waiting for my rings to come in.

I have a Remington sps varmint in .243win, wearing a Choate varmint stock and a Farrel 20moa base. Just waiting for my rings to come in from Jerry at Mystic so I can mount my new vortex and get to the range.
Two months is a long time to wait without a range trip.

Learned quite a few things reading this thread. Thanks Underthegun!

No problem. I wanted it to sort of be an educational thread. Not just a place to brag about the occasional small group someone may have got lucky with. (But I guess it is also sort of a place to brag).

So Heres my attempt, 5 group, 5 shots of each group, at 100 yards.

Top left: 0.556"
Top right: 0.291"
Center: 0.641"
Bottom Left: 0.724" (woow that was close!)
Bottom Right: 0.399"

Smallest group: 0.599-0.308=0.291"
Average: 0.522"

my hardware:

ACCURACY INTERNATIONAL AE 308
20" Factory barrel
Factory stock
Factory action
Factory trigger
Factory bolt
Well everything is factory out of the box, so I think my rifle is qualified in this challenge right?

Im shooting handloads, Im gonna improve my shooting and do the 0.5MOA challenge next time!

Failed Attempt!!

Well I had a chance at the range, so thought I would give it a try with a rifle I hold dear to my heart, and that got me hooked on the precision game when I was a young lad. It was a bad day to try it, overcast, winds gusting 23kmh half value, and a really think its time to upgrade my 18year old scope. I shot 150rnds today and this is the best I can do...

I know some people have trouble believing a .22lr could do this challenge, there is tons of witnesses that can attest how accurate this rifle is. I will complete it with this rifle one day.... just not today

My MKII can print 1" groups at 100m on a good day and that's with bulk box Blazer ammo. I have yet to try with the Standard plus that I have on hand but now you've got me wondering ...

That's exactly why I'm trying. When I watched a first time shooter hit 10 shots inside 5inch at 100yards with big block ammo and this rifle I got to wondering about "if only I had match rounds"

So more on order, and waiting for calm day, hope you don't beat me too it haha

Gave this a go today and although not worthy of a picture it was my best set of groups yet. I managed to get six sub-moa groups. The largest was 0.954 and the smallest was just under .500. I think the rifle could do it, the guy behind the trigger may be a different story...

I will try again in a couple of weeks.

The 6mm to .243 conversion doesn't work exactly because European calibers are generally measured to the Lands while North American calibers are measured to the Grooves. A perfect example is 7mm calibers, in England they're called .275 (exact conversion) but over here we call them .284.

Well here is my attempt with my Tikka Tactical 308.

I am shooting a Tikka Tactical 308 with a Falcon Menace 4-14X FFP scope. My load is 44.7gr of Varget in Hornady brass with Federal 210 primers pushing 168gr Sierra Matchkings

My setup

My group sizes are

1- .522"
2- .396"
3- .317"
4- .284"
5- .425"

Average .389"

Small group .284"

I will give this challenge a crack with my AR. I tried the 1/2 moa challenge and almost made it but I believe I would have completed this one. Can't remember I'll have to go back and check.

I would love to make this list! I will make it a New Years resolution to work to that goal.
Wish me luck ........I will need it!
