Today was my first real attempt at the 50 yard challenge. It's harder than it looks. Some of my groups were good. Others sucked ( in my opinion. )

The HV Aguila out of my savage mk2 fv-sr is like 3/5 groups of 1/2". Not bad, but the SK standard plus was like 1/2" at 100m! No joke bug hole group at 100m. But that was only one time, the SK doesn't eject properly, so each round has to be extracted manually. I may need another ejector spring.
 
Is the stock bedded? Did you try changing the takedown torque? How does it shoot at 25 yds? More scope for small groups is a must. I would have thought one of those ammos would have given at least respectable groups.
 
I think the way I was squeeze/pulling the trigger had an effect as well. I think I noticed that IF I pulled the trigger straight back instead of squeezing it, made for better groups.... I was running out of ammo to prove that theory though.....


The Aguila HV shot really good from my Savage 64...


I'll see if I can locate some match grade ammo, and re attempt....... I'm sure the gun can do it... boils down to me.......

Today, I did not shoot at the 25 yards. I have before, & all the groups were dime size easily!!!!

I didn't change the torque, bills fit perfectly under the barrel.....
 
Dime at 25 will open up considerably at 50. It will need to be a small single hole at 25 to make 1/2 at 50. Try changing the torque on the takedown, sometimes that helps too. Also, practice practice practice. Different hold positions, different areas for rests, less coffee, there are so many things that affect group size, we could spend days discussing that.
 
That rifle "should" be capable of better groups than that even with shisty bulk ammo. Maybe not 5 group challenge good, but a few good groups should be had. I have never liked that style rest and prefer bags. A higher power scope would be better, but not a must. I would say practice is your best friend in this instance. I've seen many lower end builds (yours is not lower end) shoot much better on many brands of bulk ammo. Try the good stuff for sure, but practice, practice practice with the cheap stuff till you can make it look good once in a while. The 10/22 built I beat the challenge with used cci mini mag 36 gr hp which are my favorite all around (I like my bullets to be accurate as well as kill things efficiently)
 
2 things should shrink the groups some SK std plus ammo and at minimum a 16x power scope.Can't hurt to try a few different types of target ammo and see what your gun likes.
 
What we all need to understand is that just because we put a bunch of high end parts together to make a very nice rifle, which this one is btw, it doesn't mean that it won't require the same testing and experimenting that all rifles require. It may need a pressure pad or some bedding under the front part of the barrel to get the most from it. It may be one of those picky barrels that only likes one kind of ammo, and you just haven't found that ammo yet. Maybe more break in, try some bags instead of the rest you are using. Maybe pillar bedding if that has not been done, bedding the whole action. It might be the technique you are using, it might be the fact that you cannot hold it like other rifles you have owned. Shoot it lots with many kinds of ammo, try as many different holds as you need to, just gives you more excuses to go out and shoot more. Good luck and happy shooting.
 
scope 24 at least for 50 use the tools that are here .hunting is one game center mass is a win ,,,if you want a dime group you have to see the dime nice rifle btw can definitely do better

Being willing to try and work at it is very important. But that's not enough on its own. In addition a good rifle, which is there, a good scope is needed. Hawke makes nice affordable scopes. But the 3-9 models just aren't enough. Good ammo is a must. Try SK Standard Plus or better. The rest has room for improvement. Sand bags are probably better, but it wouldn't hurt to get something with a bit of weight as a plastic Caldwell Matrix makes shooting well more challenging . Good luck!

That's a very nice rifle you have!
I wouldn't read too much into the results you got. Buy some quality target ammo (sk/lapua /RWS etc), get some decent front and rear bags and re-try again. Go out on a calm day and keep your ammo warm if you shoot on a cold day (a small cooler with microwaved glycol packs works well). Your scope magnification isn't ideal but you can deal with that later (its hard but not impossible to shoot 1/2 in groups at 9x). Once you know what your rifle can do you can start working on improvements (bedding, better scope, etc).

This challenge is hard even for quality bolt-guns with match grade ammo. I wouldn't let one attempt discourage you from trying again but you will need to buy some match quality rounds.

Based on your build list, your rifle is probably more than capable with decent ammo. That said, Aguila ammo is the real deal in my Sav. Mark II and my buddy's NS522. 0.5" groups are possible with the Standard Velocity and/or the subsonics.
