My First 1000yd Shoot

Sorry guys, but the annual shoot is going to get moth balled for now. Way too much traffic and it gets worse each season. Looking into the mechanics of getting a location that we can block off for the weekend but that is meeting with HUGE resistance.

Essentially, although there is no legal restrictions, there is no support either so this is pretty much a few guys having fun in an afternoon type thing.

For those who haven't shot far, the best thing I can suggest is get your rifle shooting well at 200 or 300yds, grab a rangefinder and a ballistics program, get to some open terrain where the ground will kick up dust or you can spot impacts and go for it.

Except for dialing up your scope, THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE TO SHOOTING CLOSE OR FAR. Sure, you will need to hold more into the winds and it takes a bit longer for the bullet to get there but all the things that make hitting at SR possible, apply to LR.

Wally's first shot was at 500+yds and he dropped a bullet (not even his ideal load) within a couple of feet of the target. Next shot (again, another load) reduced the distance. On his third shot which was with his ideal load, he was within a ft of the rock. A bit of adjusting for wind and he was happily dropping shots into and close to the target.

Then we went to 730yds and 1035yds with the same results.

If the scope tracks properly and you can get an accurate range, the ballistics programs will get you close enough to see hits. For modern cartridges, 1000yds is really not that far for plinking and the bullets will track easily.

Although there will not be an annual shoot, I am more then happy to head out now and then and shoot with you guys. During the week is best (low traffic) so if you are in the area or drive up (Kevan get in your truck!!!), we can go play for an afternoon.

Does that mean I'm an addict? I buy bullets off Jerry all the time, albeit not from his trench coat. :D

Jerry, you GOTTA show me around this spot once my 6BR gets done in the spring :cool:
 
How does that Mag setup work with the shorter .223? I have the .223 center feed mag and it is blocked at the rear. Do the rounds get caught on the lower portion of the block in the mag when it is loaded to capacity? I have been itching to get one but I would like to know how you made it work.

There is supposed to be a mag made specifically for the 223 but I don't own it.

I did have to block the inside of the extended mag box to make it work. Alot of fiddling around. Not hard to do but time consuming.

Big issue is the factory top. I had one mag where the lips were not made right and it wouldn't feed well. This one seems to work well.

Long range (1000+) shooting is the most addictive of all the shooting I've done. If anyone's ever in my corner of the world, let me know. Got a place on deeded land (mine) where we can play out to about 2500 yds. Doesn't take much of an excuse for me to blow off ranching and go shoot as long as nothing real critical at work interfers. My son and I spent the last 2 afternoons at the range till it got too dark. Didn't think it was possible to hit a 6' x 4" target at 850 with an Sks, but it happened. Just about crapped myself at the spotting scope..lol
