My first 17 HMR

I picked up my first 17 HMR today, a Browning T-bolt in walnut / blued. I have the identical rifle in 22 WRM and it shoots one hole 10 shot groups at 50 mtrs with CCI maxi mag. I know nothing of

the 17, does it have as good accuracy potential as the 22 WRM? I really like the Browning as a full sized mans rimfire, very, very nicely finished with real walnut and real checkering and a 22" barrel. I hope the 17 works out as well as my mag and I'll be a very happy camper!! I put a Leupold Vari X-I 3-9 on it in the special Browning rings, damn fine looking set-up, hope it shoots as good as it looks.:dancingbanana::)
 
Never had anything but CZ's in 17 HMR, but perhaps your browning will shoot just as well so get ready for 50 in one hole at 50 yards. FS
 
C-fbmi, you are gonna love your gun... in my experience the Hummer is inherently more accurate than WMR... YMMV... but I am interested to see what you think. That Browning has a nicce classic look to it, I can tell that is your preference. I don't have the Browning Hummer, but I do have Savage, CZ and Henry Hummers and they are among my favorite rimfires. As a sidebar, I am not even remotely interested in the new Win 17 WSM... the cost to shoot it will be more than the cost to reload my K-Hornets. Look forward to a range report, if you find the time. Also, some pics of your gun would be nice.

The 22 mag was fair to acceptable with a bunch of other ammo about 1 1/2"-2" at 50 for 10 shots then our LGS got in some maxi mags, which I've had good experiences with before, so out to the range for a very pleasant surprise and a fun afternoon with the little bangers.

You guys got any ammo or bullet weight that stands out across the board in the HMR, or is every rifle and ammo it's own problem? I picked up 2 Win loads and 2 CCI loads for initial testing. Then there's Fed and Horn and Rem, any preference between the 17 gn and 20 gn?

hoytcanon, the shop didn't have the CZ full stock in 17 or that would have been what came home with me, for sure. Got 2 CF in the 550 FS and it would have been a sweet little brother addition to the family but alas.............

i had a savage 93r17 that would shoot one ragged hole at 100 yards, so i'm assuming youll be able to do the same.

my 17 loved the fed premium 20gr. anything else it just absolutely hated. dont make your opinion untill you find an ammo that it likes. because i was nearly 2" at 100 yards with any type of horady

Yes it is. :) My last HMR was a CZ452 Varmint and while it kept trying to tell me it wanted 20gr. Hornady, I kept feeding it 17grainers. Still varmint-hunting-accurate, but not the groups I could pull-off with the 20s. Anyhow, I just added an HMR back to the collection (yipee!) and when it's scope shows up in the coming week or so, it'll be 17gr. V-Max I'll feed it first. If that doesn't shoot well, then 20s...then move off of Hornady to CCI. I have a hunch the Hornady 17s will be the ticket though.
 
my marlin 17hmr perfers winchester ammo over any other brand.it likes the 17gr v-max over the 20gr hollow points.it shot ragged holes at 50 meters with the 17gr v-max and a fixed 4x bushnell scope.i have a 3-9 on it now but would like to get a better rimfire tactical in 6-24 or similar.
 
i had a 6x24x50 barska on my .17, i found that on 18x zoom at 100 yards was perfect magnification to see bullet holes, the rest was just to blur up my image
 
I have the t-bolt 17HMR varmint model. Have only tried hornady and winchester ammo. The winchester did not group well but is great in my savage HMR. The t-bolt really likes the hornady 20gr. Beautiful rifle, enjoy.
 
I have tried just about every ammo produced from our Savage and CZ's and narrowed it down to Hornady 20 grain XTP's... which is also far superior to the 17 VM's for any kind of critter shooting. The Winny stuff had alot of FTF's & split necks IME.
 
Did some informal shooting with it today and after I got it sighted in at about 100 yds, (no targets just dirt clods etc) it seemed to hit everything I shot at out to about 150 yds. I need to build a bench and get some target stands at 100 mtrs.
 
Nice little rifles and more accurate than the trigger will allow. The 17 I had was accurate with Hornady 17gr. Vmax, the 22 Mag with CCI Maxi Mag, the 22LR with Mini Mag and all fed flawlessly. Maybe one day someone will make an aftermarket trigger system, then I'll buy again.

That would have been a very nice FS family for sure... to make room for that new baby, I think you need to let go of your Model 7 FS 7mm-08... I know a good home! :D

How is it possible, with all those guns and all that open space, that you don't have a 100m range yet??? For your next group invitation, instead of a reloading team, you need a carpentry/construction team... to get you started, I know a very good forester/carpenter and he comes cheap! ;)

Are you referring to those rifles in Browning T-Bolt models??? It is time for an aftermarket trigger kit for sure... I heard one was in the works at Rifle Basix, but until then there are some DIY options, if you are the adventureous, handy sort... here are a couple links;

Hoytcanon, I'm at my new property in southern BC this winter and the range is 50 miles away. I need to build a range here on the property, after I have my new gun vault/loading room built, which I'm working on now.

No need to let the 7-08 go to add the CZ FS rimfire, did I mention I'm building a new gun vault, with more rifle resting places?

I find the triggers very acceptable on both T-bolts, good enough in fact, I've never even taken the 22 mag apart to see if I could tweek it.

Ahhh sooo... If you were going to winter south, you should have aimed with a 6.5-284 not a .22 short... Texas needs help controlling the deer and feral populations...

AH yes and I have many friends there, however I own this property and am trying to built my retirement around this property. Built new 5000 sq ft shop, now I'm building new loading room/gun vault, need addition on house c/w stone fireplace...............none of which can I do from Texas !!
