My first 1911

So, I finally took the plunge and got a decent 1911. Going to take it out shooting this weekend probably. Got it all disassembled and nicely cleaned/lubed. Unfortunately, field stripping takes a little longer than my glock, but I'll just have to get used to that.

I would only suggest you strip it down no further than what your manual specifies, for regular maintenance and cleaning a field strip is usually more than enough

go and shoot it, get it dirty, then worry about stripping....LOL
 
1911?....... 1911? What were you thinking Onagoth? I would have had another glass of kool-aid & drunk deeply of the Glockenspiel. The 1911 offers an antiquated design, blockiest grip, poor magazine capacity in most flavors, HEAVY weighty non-sense with a SAFETY and a ridiculous price for most? Great for the gun cabinet or collector? I can't appreciate this platform and despite its respectable history, it is retains its glory in historical appreciation only FOR ME! PS...looks like that left hand had some hammer bite...are you a lefty?

STI make good pistols. Presuming the trigger was the right length for me, the only thing I'd change on that specimen would be to add an S&A magazine funnel, for the lengthened backstrap. I think you've made a damned good choice.

Detail-stripping of 1911 frames & slides is utterly harmless to them, and very easy once you've done it the first time. The slide is pretty much self-explanatory (just don't let the firing pin spear you through the eye when you take the retainer off); frame reassembly, however, with its disconnector, can be confusing at first in absence of a good text. I followed Layne Simpson's instructions in The Custom Government Model Pistol, though, and the thing just fell apart and went back together again like a Lego set.

Do it as often as you want, if you're a clean freak.

this is a real pistol, you got no plastics in your hand and you'll see the diff soon!
go out and shoot it and tell us the results!
 
I really like my Spartan, I am sure you will like yours too!

My grips & safety look different than yours... My grips have a big STI on them and my safety is not ambi....

Did you change any parts? The day I got mine I put on some Pachmyer grips, I didn't want to mess up that nice rose wood!

I make a point of knowing how to detail strip all my guns, not really for cleaning purposes, just for my own FYI kinda thing. Also, it case something breaks, I might need to repair during a match. ;)

Nope, not slide bite, just an unrelated nick. The more I got thinking about it, the more I realized my collection isn't complete without a 1911. There might be better guns, but thats a whole other thread (which has been discussed at length) :)

Its a used gun, so some of the things were changed out. The grips aren't a huge thing for me, more look good factor than anything. I might change them out for some different ones down the road.

Kinda like the small recoil spring retainer? The first time I undid the barrel bushing thing, that thing shot out 20 feet across the basement. :p

You'll have to accept my crappy descriptions, I don't know the name of all the parts yet

I meant just for now, go and enjoy, it's still new, it does not need a major cleaning yet.....

put a few hundred down the pipe, then do a detailed strip and clean

it was only a suggestion

I like to know my gun works before I do anything to possibly make it not work, but by taking apart and not shooting it first, and it don't work, maybe I did something to cause the malfunction, u know what I mean ?

and yes knowing your gun inside and out is always a good thing........
 
Got my Spartan a couple months ago from gunnar - my first 1911 too! You made a great choice IMHO. Haven't detail stripped it yet, but have found a couple great youtube vid's demonstrating a 1911 detail strip ... one of these days I'll become adventurous and try it ... hopefully not having to ship a bunch of parts back to gunnar for reassembly!
