My first 1911

Kinda like the small recoil spring retainer? The first time I undid the barrel bushing thing, that thing shot out 20 feet across the basement.

Recoil spring plug, yeah. Those things can, seriously, break your teeth.

Get yourself a nice fat nylon bushing wrench, the kind that traps the plug for a little bit of arc as the bushing moves aside. Other advantage of the nylon ones is that they're non-marring.

never could find a bushign wrench, so i use 2 pencils and make sure the spring jumps into a controlled direction (ie bucket)

I have a synthetic bushing wrench now for those hard to turn bushings but for years I made do with the back of a plastic Bic pen. I'd use it to depress the recoil spring plug so that it was just under flush of the bushing. Then turn the bushing to the side and then allow the recoil spring plug to ease forward into my hand, taking up the pressure off the spring. The plastic butt end of the Bic pen won't slip if you allow it to sit on the edge of the recoil spring plug checkering. The end of the pen is small enough in diameter that with the recoil spring plug depressed in this manner there is still plenty of room for the legs of the bushing to clear it as you turn it off to the side. And being plastic it won't mar the metal either.

Of course during this operation I rest the back of the 1911 on the top of the work bench on something like an old mouse pad with the muzzle end up. Of course the pistol is unloaded and the magazine is removed. And I am also wearing eye protection.

There's no need for the recoil spring plug +/or recoil spring to shoot across the room. Or worse into your eye.... ;)

I know its a Norc he is taking down, but served me well.

Thanks guys, I'll let you all know how it shoots after the weekend. Hopefully my AR15 scope mount comes in by then as well.

Huh? This is sarcasm.... right?

1911?....... 1911? What were you thinking Onagoth? I would have had another glass of kool-aid & drunk deeply of the Glockenspiel. The 1911 offers an antiquated design, blockiest grip, poor magazine capacity in most flavors, HEAVY weighty non-sense with a SAFETY and a ridiculous price for most? Great for the gun cabinet or collector? I can't appreciate this platform and despite its respectable history, it is retains its glory in historical appreciation only FOR ME! PS...looks like that left hand had some hammer bite...are you a lefty?

:puke:

Really nice gun BTW.... I have been considering one for a while now.

Just got me one of these from gunnar at Armco. Sweet gun (its my first 1911 as well).
Gunnar installed ambi safety and did some trigger work to about 3 pound pull.

Took it to range earlier this week and it was love! Great shooting gun. You will love yours

Cheers
