My first 45-70?

I shot this 7 pointer yesterday with my 45-70. Love this rifle .

The deer walked out in front of my stand and stopped behind the trees to the right of my rifle aprox 25 yards away .

Personally, I lean towards the Winchester 1886, despite the hefty price tag.

I will note that in the shown configuration, it's not the most practical... Steel butt plate is rough on the shoulder and the barrel/magazine are a little on the long/heavy side for hauling through the bush.

Those 1886's have manufacturing bugaboo's of their own that can make them more frustrating than any Marlin... that being the "rebounding hammer". This can be "fixed" by a main spring modification that nullifies the safety aspect of the rebounding hammer. Lots of reports of "unfixed" 1886's not firing half the time.

Love this thread, I've only ever shot the 45/70 in Canada and found it awesome, what a stopping power. I plan on buying one out there next year to take home to the UK. Probably the 22 inch marlin 1895.

picked up my 1895 sbl for $775 shipped on the EE... I was lookin for one for a while and the add was probably only up for 5 minutes before I told the guy I would take it... not jm stamped like I was told but the fit and Finnish is decent... I love it... a bit expensive to feed but it's tons of fun... haven't taken it hunting yet but for next fall I plan on putting a silver leupold on top and taking a moose with her

Lurv this rifle

I have had a number of Marlins in 45/70 over the years including two Guide Guns, an SBL and a GBL. I even tried selling my reloading equipment for the 45/70 along with all my brass so that I would not be tempted. I have now given up the futility of this and have another Guide Gun. I prefer the Guide Gun to the GBL and SBL since it is a little lighter and easier to carry. I noticed in an earlier post in which it was stated he did not like the muzzle blast from the shorter barreled Guide Gun, these where originally available with ported barrels.

I bought one of the original ported barrel versions when they first came out. I Put a scope on it and used it for everything. Now I have gone to XS ghost ring sights and a large loop lever, as the original one did not work very good while wearing gloves. You can load these appropriately for pretty much anything that walks. This rifle is definitely on my no sell list.
