my first ar build M16A1 clone

Yes you have to be careful when using it left handed. Brass is usually bounces off the forward assist housing, but once in the while you can get one off the forehead too. I'm right handed so not an issue for me.
Thanks I like XM gray and black mix on it :)
Do you end up eating brass shooting like that? I've never fired an AR without a brass deflector, I hear it can be an issue when shooting "wrong handed". Regardless, I like the look of it. Nice build OP.

Maybe a silly question, but would a brass catcher resolve the problem for a left handed shooter? You'd then have the bag hanging there in your line of sight, of course....

That's neat. Don't have to chase brass after either, serves dual purpose I like it.

I've got a brass catcher like this (made by Caldwell) and while it does work, it has a nasty habit of sliding down, blocking the ejection port, and causing a jam.

Yes, it is hooked over the shell deflector. I doubt it would work well on an upper that doesn't have the shell deflector on it.

A retro CAR-15 11.5 with the old A1 style upper and sights is definitely my next build.
Does anyone have a source for:
(A) an upper like that
(B) Long Flash hider
(C) metal buttstock ?

Absolutely these have a potential of causing jams. any restriction in the path of ejected case can force that case back in to the ejection port. Causing stoppage.
I thought I saw some that were made of plastic, were more rigid and less problematic untill full of brass?

Nice!
That's how they're supposed to look!
I had one a ways back but sold her. The DA barrels were a life saver when they were around. Dirt cheap 20" pencil barrels with a 1:9 twist!?
I always found the balance, accuracy and weight unmatched in the original A1 configuration, the sight radius is very long lending to the great accuracy.
I have zero time for the "modern AR", it's become a Barbie accessory stick monstrosity for mouth breathing, COD fantasy geeks. Too much crap hanging off them, too heavy and unbalanced, so many pointless gadgets and gimmicks it's actually physically become the beaten dead horse of lore.

Get a nice thin target style front sight post and a couple rounds of good ammo to see what kind of accuracy you can really squeeze out of it.
