After being a staunch anti-AR guy since I started shooting (ONLY because everyone has one and I like to be different) I finally gave in. I started by picking up 2 of the NEA blem lowers from SFRC. I compiled all the parts id need to build up one of the guns how I thought id like it on as tight a budget as possible. In the process ive actually collected enough parts to pretty much finish the 2nd lower into a complete (and quite nice) gun. Just a few more parts waiting to come in before that ones done too.

Today, I finally finished my first AR build though. It was a learning experience to say the least. Some things I didnt realize would be so difficult and complicated, some I had no idea would be so simple. Overall, I like the platform so far (havent shot this one yet). easy enough to work on and definitely VERY light compared to my last VZ58 and my current Tavor.

So here she is:
-CMMG upper and bolt assembly
-CORE 16 inch barrel 1/9 twist, carbine length gas system
-Lowpro gas block
-Rainier Arms Mini Comp
-Phaze 5 charge handle
-NEA lower
-CMMG LPK
-NEA 12 inch FF quad rail
-Magpul Stock, grip, AFG and BAD lever
-Rainier Arms Buffer tube
-DPMS buffer and spring
-Vortex Strikefire

I think thats it. My only area of annoyance at the moment is that the rail and lower match, but the upper doesnt. So, I think im going to have all 3 parts sand blasted and coat them with Duracoat in FDE. Im also going to swap out the Stock and tube with an ACE Skeleton setup.

So what do you think? Currently, unfired. Ill be out tomorrow to actually shoot it.

I'm looking at an AR-15 as one of my next purchases. other than the fun side is there either a financial or practical side to building your own vs. buying one out of the box?

Looks good, Please post pics once it is coated.

AR-15... the tuner cars of the gun world.... or a grown man's barbie.... either way good times all round.

I have less than $800 into this one (not including the optic)... i figure its worth more than that. But who knows. You can buy a norc for like $650 or so and theyre great starter guns. I have 3 buddies with them and they all work perfect. Not the prettiest... but function great.

Fun to do when i have a bit of knowledge on AR, since i know freaking nothing about them i went the easy way bougt a Wyndham SRC with D.I. and bought a Core 15 piston with the 1 in 8 SS Match barrel... JP.

Looks good, these rifles are a lot of fun putting together. Have you tried out a "go" and "no go" gauge? I never had one not check out but it's always good insurance.

Fired it today for the first time. I have a buddy who works on and builds ar's a lot and he said not to bother worrying about headspace. I'm using a factory barrel so it didn't need to be fit at all. No problems. Only issue is a trigger reset problem. It only resets halfway. I have to physically push it back out a tiny bit before I can fire again. I'm going to take it apart again and see what's up. Otherwise it's great. Feels excellent.
