My first AR needs some sights and mags

Waiting on the paperwork to pick up my first AR, a Wyndham Weaponry 5.56.

It ONLY comes with rails and 1 5-round magazine. Id like some flip up iron sights to start with that I can use with a low power optic at a later date. I've never owned an AR before but I have heard the Magpul name bandied about.

Any other brands or specific models I should consider?

What about AR pistol mags with 10-rounds? They all work with any standard AR I assume?
 
well magpul BUIS are plastic... so if you are planning on shooting it a lot they can heat up real quick... so that's something to consider. depending on what your price range is for irons you can find all sorts of stuff online. I like Diamondheads myself, but that's just me. Troy makes nice battle sights as well.

Are you going with a full length rail?

and yes, LAR10 mags work in any AR that shoots 5.56/.223
 
Now this is just my opinion, unless you are working in a non permissive environments or regularly clearing houses? I would forgo the cost of a 'couple hundred" and just get an Aimpoint or similar. Given the ruggedness of that optic, I doubt that it would fail unless you were involved in the previous situations I mentioned. That $200 put towards an H1 or T1 and you are ahead of the game IMO.
 
Magpul MBUS are fine unless your front sight is going on your gas block. As stated, those get hot and polymer isn't a great idea. You could get Magpul MBUS PRO, GGG, Troy etc. They're all metal, but will cost you $2-300 for a set.

Some of the competitions I've shot mandated the use of BUIS for stages, but they're a chunk of money you may want to use on an optic.

Speaking of optics, you can go cheap (Bushnell TRS25 do ok), a little more gets you a Vortex Sparc or Holosun, more still will get you and EoTech or Aimpoint. Head to the range on a busy day and see if anyone will let you look through theirs. I prefer EoTech myself as the aperture is huge and I find the 65MOA donut of death fast for CQB

For mags, get LAR15 pistol or Beowulf mags. IMHO don't bother with the polymer PCV Beowulf as they're flimsy. With all the questions is suggest authentic metal Alexander Arms Beowulf mags if you can find/afford them. Mags are perhaps the most crucial piece... I've seen $5k worth of H and K incapacitated by junk mags.
 
You already got all the answers you need about the sights..............but I agree with Mildot you could start with an optic, IMHO you will have more fun with an optic (I went Eotech and don't regret it) and might never need sights, depending on the type of shooting you do.
I really like the ATRS 10 rounds mags.
 
Troy BUIS are pretty much the gold standard for irons. Optic-wise, don't go cheap. It's false "economy" as you'll only have to spend a lot more coin on a quality optic later. If you're looking for red dots, look at the Aimpoint PRO. It's a top notch entry level optic. Save a little longer and you might want to check out a COMP M3 or M4, or look at one of their Micros like the H-1. If holosights are what you're looking for, EoTech is the only way to go. They're less expensive than the mid/high-end Aimpoint, but suffer from shorter battery life and aren't as robust.
 
If im correct, you got the Windham Weaponry Carbon SRC at FOC on the wknd right? In that case, the front rail is on the gas block and as mentioned before, they can heat up and poss do some damage to the MBUS front sight since its polymer.

Ive also read many cases where ppl have plastic mounted on the gas block and are absolutely fine. I also wanted to get flip up sights but might just get an optic instead for now
 
I recently bought a Windham as well, I picked up a Bushnell AR series 1-4x ffp illuminated recital scope with rings for $320. It works very well for the price.
 
I put Magpul BUIS on one of my AR's before the red dot. They are coarse for distances beyond 200yards, but work as designed. If you are an excellent shooter with aperture sights already you will make them work for you. They are not however an A1 or A2 traditional AR15 sight set up if you will shoot distances like in service rifle at your local Provincial rifle association.

I like the look of BUIS with an optic, but in reality, once the optic goes there the BUIS are rarely used if at all.


I have Troy BS's on another rifle and am not at all pleased with the diamond aperture versus traditional circular. If I bought again it would be a troy battle sight with the circular aperture. They are nicer looking than the Magpul Gen2's and well made of course. YMMV
