Woke up uncharacteristically early, so put the time to good use.

Been watching this fella since he sprouted velvet in the spring. Was hoping to get him on opening day, but... Them's the breaks.

A good morning!

Not huge, but not small either. I wanted him on ice before he started covering any of the does around here.
Rather have mulies!

To be really clear, longbranch, not my first deer or first whitetail, but my first BC whitetail.

When I grew up here, seeing deer was pretty rare, and they were all Mule Deer when they were here. Had never seen a WT here until the last few years.

The area is starting to see whitetail moving in, and I have mixed feelings about that. Mostly I see it as a negative, as they tend to be aggressive and crowd out the mule deer population. They also hybridize quite readily. PITA, or easy choice, depending on your point of view, that, when you whack a hybrid, as you then get to choose which tag you gotta cut, eh.

Gun is a late '50's Win 70 Fwt in .308 Winchester. My father bought it new.

Shot was 165 yards and a bit, using some 180 grain 'bag' bulk Winchester bullets. Dunno what the velocity is. I looked up a load that supposedly matched the velocity of the factory ammo I was using, and went with that. The bullets performed very well. I'd love to tell you it was a bang-flop, but it wasn't, as I pulled the shot. Went through the body longways and broke a hind leg. Followed him into the long grass, missed him once, put one low through his ribs, then put one good hit through him at 30 yards. All in the space of about 5 minutes.

Coulda just let him sit there and die, but I figured that I'd get him over and done, so I moved in on him.
I recovered two bullets from him, found a third set of holes. Not terrible, but I could have done better.
Real life performance, not the same as shooting paper, eh.

The river in the background is the Fraser. The property is my home, been in the family for a hundred years and a bit.
I like it! :D

Got the guy hanging and skinned out, gonna start cutting today.

Cheers

Hey Trev, thanks for the added story and yes the White Tails moving into Mule deer range is troublesome.

Not sure what the answer is , suffice to say a more liberal season on the White Tails in areas where they expand into non traditional areas.

The problem there is convincing the biologists and then the government to allow more openings/seasons on the white Tails.

Oh, the last time I tried stalking up on my paper target it had no idea where I was ;)
Thanks Again for the follow up and Good Eating,
Rob

Cutting what? Firewood, I hope. Let that guy hang 4 days at least.

Cutting meat.

He can age in the freezer. :)

It's hitting 25 degrees here daytime temperatures. It's get him in the fridge or watch him ferment (or turn into home to a generation of flies).

Stripped the carcass yesterday, got it all into the fridge.

Mostly burger and stew today, got through the front end and rib as well as the rear shanks.

Tomorrow it's cutting steaks and packaging some roasts, some more stew and maybe a bit more burger if the trim merits grinding.

BTDT, all I ever got for hanging a deer was dry meat.

Cheers

The last ten years while working the Prince George to Prince Rupert rail corridor we watched the white tails working their way west all the way to Rupert. They do interbreed from what I understand. I am guessing it is generally male WT on female mule deer? I thought I saw hybrids but was never sure at 45mph.
