surface prep is the most important. It must be sanded and scuffed for better paint adhesion. (nothing will stick to a shiny or smooth surface) Also, degrease, degrease, and degrease some more. Some use acetone or thinners, but I prefer MEK. Wipe with a newly wetted clean cloth continually, and good results will follow. Make sure it has time for a good cure.

Bad news is to do this right you have to start over. The best way to do these that I have found is get it sandblasted, this roughens up the wood. Paint it, sand it, paint it, sand it, paint it. The nice thing about the 3 steps of painting is that you can air brush camo into it and clearn matte finish it so it's non-reflective but has a camo patern (or hint of one) to it. Or just all black matte is cool. When you do that make sure you hit that barrel guard, brown belongs on hunting rifles :)

Here's the strategy around the Chu Wood stock. Burn the wood stock entirely. Salvage all the metal parts and keep them for a USGI glass stock. If you truly must have wood, then order a new stock from Boyd Brothers stocks. That way you get what you want right away. The Chu wood stocks are great for starting controlled burns in logging blocks that have been clear cut.

Save yourself the grief. Been there, done that.
