My First Build...What do you think?

Hey y'all,

This is my first AR build, so needless to say, I was pretty damn excited. I've been lucky because parts, and not just any parts, were hard to find, so I had to scrounge! I built instead of buying because I wanted to make it mine (and also so that I don't have a lot of swapped parts laying around).

Anyway, here are the contents of the lower:

Noveske Gen 2 receiver
Rock River Arms parts kit
Magpul UBR stock
Bad-Ass ambi safety (with the crank and hybrid selectors)
Magpul Miad grip
Buffer spring
Spikes-T2 buffer
Magpul B.A.D. lever
(To be added: Troy ambi magazine lever (looking for one) and Geissele SD3G trigger (on order!))

But yeah, I am trying to figure out what I want to do as an upper. I'm thinking a Vltor upper with BCM BGM and a KAC URX 3.1 rail (hopefully I can borrow a tool somewhere) or Noveske NSR or Geissele SMR. I've already ordered a BCM ambi charging handle (mod 4) but I don't know what to do as a barrel...I'm thinking Noveske? I want to go into "recreational-competition", so the minimum I'll go is 16".

I'd love to hear what you all think about my build and whether you have any suggestions regarding barrels or feedback on the above hand guards.

WOW! that's a heck of lower. Out of the rails you said, I would choose the Noveske NSR, but I'd rather a DD Modular Float Rail 12.0 or another longer DD rail. And for the barrel: http://www.oneshottactical.com/Merc...shot&Product_Code=FM-RA-251&Category_Code=ARP I know it's only 14.5 inches, but... Now I must admit, I'd like to know how good polygonal rifling is on an AR-15, and when I read "...produced in Germany by the same mill as H&K" my heart skipped a beat (I like H&K). If not Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply can/will custom make you a barrel at http://www.albertatacticalrifle.com/ar15.html (top row).

EDIT: BTW do you mean you're looking for a store that carries the Troy mag catch, or looking for a store that has them in stock?

-Edit- as for the KAC tool, give Darren at One Shot Tactical a dingle. Last I heard he had one he was lending/renting out. Should fix you up.
 
Looks awesome man!! Good choice for components. I'm sort of in a similar situation with my build so I'll be keeping a close eye on this one! :cheers:
 
Thanks guys! Wantabe, thanks for the suggestions. I've actually never seen the DD modular rail! What's it that you like about that DD rail over the others?

What's the difference between the Rainier Arms barrel and the SS Noveske barrel? I'm still trying to figure out barrels (match vs regular, polygonal vs regular rifling, etc) so I'm doing a lot of reading, but straight comparisons are hard to find!

jric1308, sorry, but I have no experience with the DD rail. I've been planning a rifle build for a while (value build: inexpensive, good parts), I actually was looking at a Rainier Arms Evolution rail (http://www.oneshottactical.com/Merc...shot&Product_Code=FM-RAIN11&Category_Code=RLS), but I later decided on buying a full DDM4 (V5 or V7). And DD makes the rails for the US Special Forces (RIS II rails), so they make GOOD STUFF, right?

Barrels: I'm... in the same boat as you, but I will try to explain what I think I know. Match grade parts are more accurate (National Match even more so). Polygonal rifling is supposed to be easier to clean, gets higher velocities (because the bullet touches less of the barrel), and longer barrel life, but doesn't like lead (non-jacketed) ammo. The difference between the Rainier and Noveske barrels? Price :confused: I don't know, sorry. Well, that and I know where to buy the Rainier barrel.

Pretty good, got my upper and the last of my extra parts this past week. My lower is completely built now, and just have to assemble the entire upper.

Unfortunately I have to travel for work this coming week, so the build will have to wait for another week. I'll post some pics and my parts list when I complete it.

Ended up being mostly NEA stuff because it was the easiest to find. That may change later depending on how I like it.

NEA upper, 10.5" NEA barrel w/ Crusader brake, Magpul MOE carbine lebgth handguard in FDE. Haven't completely decided on what to do for sights. I got a railed gas block and flip up sights, but the rear won't fit with my optic, so I have to figure that out still. :)
 
Wow, sounds great! A 10.5 will hopefully be my next build, or next upper, at least. I can't wait to see that upper and your insights regarding putting it all together...I heard the barrel/receiver alinement was a bit tricky.
 
If you are running the NEA Crusader brake, I would dearly love to know how it works in the modified prone position. Need to know if it does not kick up too much dirt back at ya....

Here the A2 flash hider on my RRA middy 16" works well in the modified prone!

Nice choice with the ambi safety on you lower! :D

Very nice indeed themikea! I see you got an insert for the MIAD...which one did you get?

I personally haven't given much thought into a muzzle-brake yet. I have heard some good things about Personal Weapons Systems' FSC223 but haven't looked to much into whether or not it shoots soil back at the shooter. I will definitely pay more attention to that!
 
Thanks. It is just the standard cap that comes with the MOE grip, not one of the battery or ammo inserts.

I definitely didn't pay much attention to muzzle brakes, but saw the crusader and grabbed it. Given that I will be doing a lot of indoor shooting and that I have a 10.5" barrel, I apparently couldnt have picked a louder one. :)

I ended up hand tightening my barrel onto the upper the other day just to see the length. Put the BCG and charging handle in and gave it a quick function test and it felt great. Can't wait to put the upper together completely and take it to the range. Just need some time!

What all do you have left to decide on?
 
jric, you can't go wrong with the A2 birdcage to start. It works fine with a 14.5 and longer barrel and is cheaper and easier to find until you decide on something more high-speed that suits your personal preference/taste, which looks quite good so far!

Keep up the build, good to see more of this going on.
