My first build, whatcha think! (RANGE REPORT POST 32)

Nice rig....you gotta live those AICS stocks!
The barrel length balances it out nicely...
Did you order the brake directly from APA?

Yeah A friend in the US bought it for me as a gift and sent it to me ( wink) APA doesnt ship to Canada. They have an exporter but too much to do it that way. I think brownells sells them now too.

It was a matter of money, 300+ dollars for folding option. For that type of money I will gladly take off the cheek piece for cleaning the gun.

I think you made the right choice as far as the non folding stock goes. I have a custom Remington in a folding chassis and an AI AE/MK II with the older style non folding chassis. Both stocks have the thumb type screws for removing, raise/lowering the cheekpiece and it takes less time and less hassle to remove to the cheekpiece using the thumbscrews than it does to fold the chassis. Unless you need the folder for a specific purpose other than cleaning, the money you save can be used for ammo etc, unless you are Donald Trump and money is no option...I do defnitely not fall into that category.

Well its about FN time that I got this range report done. I went through about 18 different test loads and found a couple that are quite good (168g hornady match, IMR 3031 39 g, also 175 g sierra MK with either IMR 3031 or IMR 4064 at 40 g). This gun does not like any 150g or 180g bullets, all over the map they are and I might as well be shooting my pistol at the target instead. When doing test rounds grouping was at 11/16 to 3/4 of an inch off of a lead sled. But when in my hands it is a whole different story. Pictures are of five shot groups @ 100 yards. Not too bad, but I do need some major work on my trigger pull as there is always that one or two that got away.lol. I would have done this sooner but with me being a noobie nooberton and three sets of rings later, ta daa here you have it. I do see a new trigger and monopod in my near future (it should help) Oh and I know I measured the 3/4 one the wrong way but it makes me feel better....013.jpg014.jpg015.jpg016.jpg

So I got a new timney trigger, very nice to install. But with the AICS chassis you need to pull out the dremel to grind down some aluminum to allow the safety to work. At least where it was ground down will never be seen, well if you don't remove the stock. Now I guess I'll find out if will tighten those groups a bit.

What does a 16.5" barrel work like at longer ranges? How far out do you plan to use it?

Just curious...I'm an uber-noob. I just started shooting TR this spring. My old rifle built off a Mauser sports a 28" heavy barrel. Up until now I thought 20" was short for a .308.

Haven't brought it past a 100 yet. I'm going to that CFB Petawawa sniper clinic in September which you shoot out till 600 yards. Should make it but don't really know. I'm going to chrono my loads this weekend and I don't see anytime in forseeable future of me getting to a hydro line for long distance. I'll let you know in about 2 months.

It will be interesting to hear what your muzzle velocity is and see how it works out at medium range. I'd love to get my hands on a chrono for an afternoon.

I've shot with a few guys that shoot .308's in F-class and they're running 26 and 28 inch barrels. But I've seen a lots of model 700's with 20" heavy barrels on the EE lately and wondered what they shot like.

Im lucky, we have a club chronograph to use. I'm interested to see what the velocity is as well. I new to this type of shooting as well and I figured that by the time I'm proficient enough to
Move to long range, I'd be ready for another rifle, start small I say. Lol. Shoots tight enough groups, we ll see if the new trigger helps.

How do you find recoil and muzzle climb with the short barrel? I'm guessing the rifle is pretty light too. It's obviously not too bad based on those groups. Did you shoot it without the brake?

. Those groups were shot with brake installed. Recoil is minimal, but its quite funny if there is somebody shooting beside me it will blow their hat off. Rifle is not that light for the size of it (12.8 lbs), would'nt want to be carrying that around all day.

Wow, that's a lot heavier than I thought it would be.

I was wondering why brakes aren't allowed in F/TR and I just read on another thread that they bother other shooters. I suppose it would be a bit of a challenge to concentrate shooting next to you. :D

Looking forward to more range reports when you get a chance.
