Looks good, what quality of pictures does it take? Do you have instructions you can share? What is the cost per unit to make one?
I know that doesn’t have any bearing on hobbies but I don’t think I would want to spend more than $120 on a homemade unit. I can pick the Moultrie M-80’s for $120 on sale and a set of AA batteries last more than a year. If its inexpensive maybe it can get more guys out with cameras. I know checking the card is a big hobby of mine.

Youve had a set of aa batteries last a year in a trail cam?

Mine only last that long if they in a closet... 4 weeks and a couple hundred pictures if they are on the trail.

I have, with probably 5000 pictures as well and the battery meter still said they had life in them when I changed them last.

In my camera I was running 8 aa batteries and over night in the winter they died. I did get a few hundred pictures a night though lol

Cool! I never would have guessed that even with lithium batteries and the right cam that they would ever last a year.

Theres a few good sites for this stuff. This is just a cheap Sony P32 I got for 20 bucks and it is setup to run 2 AA's in the camear and 4 external AA's . There are all kinds of cameras you can use even some DSLR's

I have built a couple dozen cameras These homebrews with Sony cameras will take a far better picture than any "storebought" that I have seen. The 4 megapixel cameras have far better lense, capture card and other components than you will find in storeboughts.

Yes I have, the new cameras just sip the battery juice. I started with the cameras as soon as they came out in a digital format. I almost bought one of the oldies back when they were 35 mm.
The big old D battery models you were lucky to get a week out of a set of batteries. Don’t put them out in the winter because they stopped working as soon as the batteries got cold. This is why I don’t put my cameras out in the winter still, plus the deer move out of where my cameras are to yard up. I can tell by the lack of tracks in the snow they are gone.
A camera I bought in 2011 went out from about May to November, and then back out in 2012 the same amount of time on the same batteries. I have some of the cheaper models that take C batteries or D batteries and you are better off spending the money up front on a better unit. In one season the batteries will be changed a half a dozen times over 7 or 8 months in the cheap units.
By far the best batteries for game cameras are they Sanyo Eneloop rechargeables. I use them year round. In winter they will work untill about 25 c. All other rechargeables will self discharge a small amount each day and will go dead even if they are not used. The Sanyo's do not self discharge.
